RE: Janet's budget

We are the laughing stock of the state of Pa.,

This paraphrase from a post at DD would like to make you think they are talking about Scranton, but what they are actually referring to are the DD posters.

I don't recall hearing anyone say they specifically watched our City Council meetings on Channel 61 for the council news and specific agenda items.  I've heard of quite a few people who would drive from the outreaches of Luzerne County up to the Chicken Coop so they could catch a little of the Janet Evans Variety Show (Comedic Dinner Theatre at it's best) and a bucket o' wings.  Talk about the perfect Thursday night date.

That's probably the first post I've read at DD with some actual truth in it.

Sadly ...... we are the laughingstock ... other towns have drinking games that involve city council meetings ... one used to be you had to chug your drink every time Janet Said the name Jay ... I'm sure that it's still the same only now it's every time Janet says the name Kay ... with the Les Spindler's and the Fay Franus's how could anyone do anything other than laugh at us .... they see how it is the intention of these people to simply show up each week with one thing on their minds ... public humiliation ... we watch them each week as they play to the camera ... watch Les sometime when he thinks he has made an insightful comment ... he looks at the camera and gives it his best Les Spindler smirk ... they think that they are the only voters in this city and that the rest of us stay home on Election Day ... well they would be wrong because we saw what an endorsement from the Looney Bin got for their candidates ... they all lost!  How much more evidence do they need that the people don't really care about bull**** they dishout every week ... some of us would love to participate and possibly come up with some soulutions ... ideas that could be shared but we don't go to the meeting because we don't want to be ridiculed ... they whisper in corners and want to know who you are and why do you feel you have the right to speak when they don't know who you are ... I know that for a fact because I have been in that position ... so sane people stay home for the most part because they don't want to put up with the stress of the Legion of Doom.  So are we the biggest lauging stock in NEPA  ... you bet your ass we are ... and most of us hate it ... someday the comedy the office is going to get wind of these meetings and actually do an episode on it ... it will be funny to those who don't live here ... but we will watch and know that it's true that truth is stranger than fiction!

Sorry rambling again ... sometimes I make no sense!

Exactly. Who is that 'big boned' chick with the big hair who was bitching about her land being taxed but unusable for the past 10 years or so? Whoever she is, my mother in law is manager of a well known restaurant in town ( Sorry, can't name which one) Anyway this broad comes in, DEMANDS a table, and when she has to wait, says "Don't you know me? I'm a big celebrity around these parts" I swear to God, this is what we have to put up with. Retarded idiots who think they're celebrities because they bitch at council meetings. Isn't that the definition of 'redneck celebrity'? They are right, they are a laughingstock, but only because people  tune in to laugh AT the 'notoroious' speakers (Les, Fay, Ozzy (how's Lump, by the way?), and the Nobel Laureate...Ray Lymon (is his lawyer ever gonna let him come back to the meetings?)), and especially Janet. I don't even know what you call it. Monty Python has nothing on us. If they want to straighten out council, the Legion, and especially Marblehead...as much as it hurts...get rid of the televised meetings. The city survived for how long without televised meetings, I think it's time to rein it in and cut the TV. Bring some decorum back to city government. This way, Janet and her minions can't pander to the camera, and Marblehead and the jackasses can't see what (if any) havoc they wrought with their hateful missives. That's just what I think.

Dill,

I absolutely agree with you ... that we need to stop Channel 61 from providing coverage of these meetings.  I did not always feel that way ... but I have to say that after years of suffering (yep suffering) through the speaches of the likes of Fay, Les, Jimmy (where's my scooter) Stucardt, Ray (I got a Letter telling me not to come to meetings or else) Lymon, it is embarrassing.  Truly embarassing.  Do I laugh ... you bet I do ... do I know that somewhere out there people are recording these things to show friends and relatives who have moved away what is going on ... you bet I know that also ... I actually record the meeting every week so I don't miss it.

Now this will show you what an avid watcher I am   the lady with all the hair who is always complaining about her land is Mrs. Serene O'Malley (don't know if I spelled her name right) ... and I do believe she thinks she is all that and a bag of chips ... so why wouldn't she carry on like that "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO SHE IS?" and if you don't know you damn well better find out for next time!

Honest to God, I have been known to start randomly shouting out "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!" while watching the meetings on channel 61. My kids think I am nuts...not only for the Springer reference, but for watching it in the first place.

Seriously, I think it was Lus that nailed it: People with diverse opinions rarely speak at the meetings because of the cat-calls, heckeling and general intimidation of 'Legion'. Would I go to speak? Actually I probably will one day, if the mood strikes me. I would, however, be tempted to make a comment to Fay Franus along the lines of....

"...I see Fay Franus in the audience this evening. Hey Fay, nice new high school, huh? I thought the new school was going to be ruin of Scranton? Funny, I didn't trip over any homeless senior citizens as I entered council chambers this evening, so I guess your gloom and doom predictions didn't come true then...nor do I think they will come true now."

As for Mr Spindler, I'm waiting for him to give Sherry credit for the smoking ban. Funny, he seems to have no problem heaping criticism on her on every other occasion.

::: Who is that 'big boned' chick ... :::  She must have a bone or two in her hair!

I know the area she is talking about.  What the hell could she possibly want to do with it except enjoy her huge yard?  If it is the part of the area I THINK she is referring to, it's the unusable dead-end of a city street and doesn't belong to her anyway.

Granted, the surface up there is ALL rock and to build something up there takes serious excavation .  Her father bitched about the same damned thing thirty years ago and couldn't get anything done about it - why all of a sudden is it the fault of "this Administration?  I hear they used to call her father "the Mayor" of the street they lived on.

I don't know exactly where her land it ... but this is what I got from watching the council meetings.  She inherited the land from her father, the city was to be responsible for the up keep of the right of way as they were paid to do so by the state for all of these years ... I guess there used to be a bridge that went to this area and it was not always a dead-end.  When they took the bridge out the state began to make payments to the city for the upkeep.  The land over the years has never been kept ... and now there are trees blocking the right of way.  Mrs. O'Malley has been begging the city for years to clear the right of way ... can't say I blame her for wanting it done if the State truly is paying the city for this to be kept up with.  But what I do not understand is this ... if you see something starting to get out of hand do you not clean it up and take care of it ... I'm just asking ... if I know I want to use land for new construction or whatever I am going to be taking care of said land.  Not letting it become an overgrown mess ... even if someone is paying for it to be done because I would be pretty clear hat that service was not being provided.  According to the council meeting I think that the right away that she was talking about being cleared may have been to steep to have a safe situation for the workers ... but then again there was another guy with a similar problem over in South Side so I don't know if it was her land or his that was deemed unsafe.  Hope I didn't ramble tooooooo much!

I know exactly where the land is.  There used to be a foot bridge over I-81 just south of River Street.  The bridge spanned only the four lanes of I-81.  There were two flights of steps above and below a set of railroad tracks located just below a street called Moltke (I guess it's technically and Avenue).  From the top of the upper set of steps to Moltke Avenue, is probably 120' (the depth of a typical lot up there).  There used to be an old house that has been torn down, cripes, YEARS ago.

Anyhoo, the railroad tracks are no longer in use, so the bridge was dismantled and the area has become overgrown - I'll give her that much.  Does she think this area is hers to use?  It is not her right-of-way - it is a dead-end of Maple Street - which does not resume to be a fully used street until at least above Froude Avenue higher up on East Mountain (if it resumes at all).  Sure, the city should maybe cut back some brush for aesthetic purposes, but I can't imagine where the state comes into the mix - maybe to maintain the area above and below the rr tracks, but the area above that???

Maybe I'm wrong, but didn't she actually started bitching and whining about this when the big Hollow Avenue scandal hit the news?  "I've got a right-of-way, too, why isn't MINE maintained?

Just another rabble-rousing zealot.
