Smoking Ban - would it be so awful if Janet brought it before Council???

They are ripping Sherry up one side and down the other over this.  Would it have been so gawd-awful if that smoke fiend Janet made the motion for the smoking ban?? They probably would have turned the tables so there would be MORE revenue because of the clean air.  Pfft...

I am a former smoker but am not a 12-stepper because of it.  I can't stand most reformed smokers -- "Oh, if I can do it - YOU can do it".  I certainly won't be jamming it down another smoker's throat because I was fortunate enough to be able to kick the habit.  Sometimes I enjoy having that aroma wafting around me, while other times it makes me gag.

Anyway -- I think the smoking ban is a good idea, I do not think it will chase patrons away.  We may see a little glitch in figures because some people will go out of town just to prove a point.  But - they'll be back and I think in the long run, it will be beneficial to the city.

This is just my opinion on the smoking ban ... but here goes ... I have tried and tried over the years to quit smoking with not much success ... program's, the patch, pills, gum ... etc.

I have taken the county offered program, that is funded by the money from the tobacco companies when they lost a lawsuit ... it was part of their settlement ... that's why R. J. Reynolds has added a "Help with quitting" Area to their website ... rjreynolds.com Check it out they not only sell wholesale cigarettes on this site but give you many ideas on how to quit smoking ... they don't really want you to quit but they have to provide this information now or risk another lawsuit.  Philip Morris also provides this information for the same reason.  Philip Morris USA Home

Now as for me I do not smoke in a bar I don't want people to know I smoke again ... it's actually a shameful thing that I do ... and I really should not be smoking ... I know this ... it's bad for me ... I used to smoke whenever and wherever I pleased with little thought to the person sitting next to me ... that's rude ... I now know just how rude I used to be ... I firmly believe that I do not have the right to pollute the air that others are breathing ... I do not have the right to subject others to the possibility of Lung cancer and the many other cancers associated with smoking ... (that's right there is more than lung cancer) Cervical Cancer believe it or not ... look it up ... being a smoker contributes to this cancer ... hard to imagine isn't it ... but it's true.  Who would ever think that lighting up could one day affect your cervix.  There are many other factors to this cancer however smoking contributes.  Crazy!

I am totally for the smoking ban .. and I do smoke ... and I know what you are thinking ... I just stated that I do not smoke in bars so how does that affect me ... well right now as of this day I could if I make the choice to do so ... and my thought about this is simply this ,...I am not going to drive to another town to patronize a bar just so I can have a smoke ... I am going to continue to go to the little neighborhood bar where I know the people ... and if I should want to have a smoke ... I am going to step outside (20 feet from the entrance) and have that smoke ... and then go back inside and socialize with the people that I have come to know and consider friends ... I will not have my life ruled by the want for a cigarette.  Besides who in their right mind is going to want to risk a DUI for the want of a smoke ... isn't that just plain crazy?

When and why did smoking become our biggest issue in this town ... it's smoke Ban it and be Done with it!

I am thrilled with the smoking ban, plain and simple. This is precisely the kind of thing I expect my government to do...namely make laws that benefit the majority of citizens and make Scranton a better place in which we can live and work.

Now I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to make the point "...why are they doing this with so many other important issues at hand?", not that I expect the DD crowd to make that kind of point without slipping in a nasty name or two. However, my response would be that if a government waited for all the 'big things' to be solved before it tackled other issues then NOTHING would ever get done. Govenrment these days has to be able to act on several fronts all at the same time, be they fiscal, public safety or the health of citizens.

Kudos to Sherry Nealon-Fannucci and to the students at West Scranton High School for making a difference.

Ag ... I didn't mean when I posted that I thought it was silly for council to be on this issue ... what I think is silly is simply this ... We should just ban it and be done with it at this point but we have been talking it to death since the student's brought it up ... we have had far toooooo much discussion about this issue ... I am definetly for it and know that matters of public safety and the public's health are important issues... but should it have taken so much discussion ... and wouldn't you think the public would be concerned with bigger issues ... that's what was the meaning behind the statement that there are other issues I also applaud Sherry, and the West H.S. students they are making a difference.

Lus,

I was thinking more along the lines that some of the DD crew think it's silly. In fact I think there is a tread along those lines. Regardless, I think most of us are on the same page relative to this issue. I was reminded of why this is a good idea yesterday, when while eating at a certain restaurant (after the Scranton HS chorus concernt....which was excellent btw...and that's not just because may daughter participated) in the non-smoking section when a customer who was smoking came up to pay her bill. Unfortunately the non-smoking section of tihs place is also by the register, so I ended up having an extra veggie with my pizza...burned tobacco.

I was hoping that it wasn't my post that you thought silly ...  because I meant no disrespect to anyone by saying "When and why did smoking become our biggest issue in this town ... it's smoke Ban it and be Done with it!"

Janet acts like she is upset for the business owners ... but it's because she herself is a smoker and she herself is inconvenienced by the ban ... and if she were a non smoker and it were her idea ... she would think banning smoking would be a GREAT IDEA!  She lives in a ME ME ME world.

And I just want to say to you that I hear the Chorus practice on a daily basis and they are absolutely fabulous ... I'm sure you were quite proud.  Congratulations to your daughter on her wonderful afternoon ... SHS's chorus is loaded with great talent.

I am sorry your afternoon was ruined though ....

Lus,

Thanks. Mrs Amabile is an oustanding chorus teacher, and I've been fortunate to have two daughters taught by her in Advanced Chorus...my oldest daughter (who graduated last year & was in it for 4 years) and now my middle daughter (who is a freshman). It really was a world class concert.

As for Janet and the smoking ban, you are absolutely correct. Mr Spindler would be heaping praise on Janet if it were her idea....funny, no praise for Sherry though. Gee, I wonder why? The Goon Squad at DD talks about being 'Politically Correct'...funny, they must have their own version of 'PC' in the DD world. I guess being reasonable and agreeing with people you are supposed to despise isn't allowed Mr P's world of Oz.

I have seen this comment at least twice at DD (does it strike anyone that DD could also be thought to mean Dumb and Dumber? If they keep making these kinds of stupid comments many people will think that is what DD really stands for, I know I already think it.)

The first post asked why it only takes 3 people on council to make decisions. Joey simply (and I do stress "simply" for him.)thinks they shouldn't be able to adopt/reject resolutions.

Three people shouldn't decide the choices of 50,000.

Last time I checked Joey (Mr. Iknoweverything) we have a 5 member council. It takes a majority vote to adopt/reject resolutions. ( That would be based on old concept, maybe you have heard of it, its called a democracy.) A majority would be more than 2 votes soooooooo 3 or more votes adopt/reject resolutions.

Did I type slow enough for you? I guess you were too busy with your "latin" classes to study simple math?

OK so here is what I found concerning the smoking ban ... I find this to be quite a ridiculous undertaking for the Pilchesky's ... and the DD'ers ... Deviant is new ... but you know what I think it's a new name that Joey the Pill is using ... what do you all think ...

Few things from a rare poster....

1.  I read over their wonderful smoking ban on their website - and find that they are truly as dumb as you say..  They cite Casinos - or gaming establisments as being a place for banned smoking; however; I believe there was an uproar over the law allowing slot machines having a sort of rider that banned smoking every where other then gaming establishments?  Thus causing smokers to have to go to a casino to smoke and drink?  It was something I found disturbing since smokers mostly have addictive personality disorders - Smokers arent usually just addicted to smoking - you usually add in drinking or gambling - and that is what they are addicted to as well.

2.  Sounds like it is about time for me to open a night club outside of the scranton city limits that would be a safe haven for smokers - any investors out there lol since I can say about 50% of the barflies in scranton - and party goers from even the U of S are smokers - and when people drink beer - it has been shown - they want to smoke more.  So idea in head - open a club in Dickson City to compete with the clubs of Scranton - since you cannot smoke in Scranton clubs as of 1/7/07.

3.  Joe - any word on a court date for the suit you filed?  It would be nice if you could just prevent these twits from even signing this ban - health issues and all - it is a business owners choice to allow smoking in their establishment or not.  Even Ruby Tuesdays has their own policies regarding smoking in their restaurant before 5 PM Monday thru Friday - they just do not allow it.

1.  I am a smoker ... and the only addiction that I have in life is smoking and drinking coffee ... hey just because we are addicted to smoking does not mean that we will become compulsive alcoholic gamblers ... wow, you people amaze me.

2.  Go ahead and open up ... but with the lack of personality that you show here on DD I don't think that you will do much business.  I have got to say this ... most of the people upset about the smoking ban are nonsmokers ... I really don't think that people are going to frequent new establishments simply because they have to step outside and smoke ... you are not giving the smokers any credit here ... we know it's not only for our own good but also for the good of those around us ... hell did you guys make this much of a stink when they banned smoking at the Stadium?  That's outside in the open air and smoking was banned there years ago ... come on get a grip and get over it ... it's only smoke people ....

3.  Were you not paying attention ... the Mayor already signed the ordinance ... he signed it at West Scranton High School ... the students who requested that this  ban be put into effect were present on stage and the Mayor signed the bill in front of the entire student body ... it was in the paper ... oh that's right you don't read the paper ... well then I guess maybe you could have caught it on any of the local news stations ... they all carried the story ... come on you all claim to be so well informed.

I think there are many questions regarding every aspect of this smoking ban ordinance. I would suggest that you contact Sherry Fanucci at the local governor's office where she works or through her email at city council to look for clarification.

Fanucci's council email:
sfanucci@scrantonpa.gov

Fanucci's work number at the governor's office: 570-614-2090

I wouldn't suggest contacting Amil Minora, since he seems to believe that the ordinance will prevent people smoking in the mall.

Joanne you took Amil's statement entirely out of context ... you may be able to read and you may be able to listen ... but you see what you want to see and you hear what you want to hear ... I think ... what Amil meant ... was simply this ... in the smoking ban you are required to be 20 feet from the entrance to a building .... so ... what Amil meant was this ... when the ban takes affect it will be nice to go to the Steamtown Mall and not have to go through the cloud of smoke ... you know the cloud of smoke that is ever present at the entrance of Boscov's ... and if you ever noticed when you go to the Viewmont Mall the ever present cloud of smoke that is in by the entrance near EXPRESS ... do you comprehend that ... or should we send you back to school to work on your comprehension skills?  Just wondering Joanne.

Joanne, your husband will file lawsuits simply because it's his hobby ... you claim he does it in the name of the taxpayer ... well I don't recall asking him to file on my behalf ... in fact I would very much appreciate it if he would cease and desist of the filing of any and all future frivolous lawsuits ... Do you two ever get afraid that one day you may have a legitimate lawsuit and it won't make it because you will have a reputation for frivolous lawsuits?  It might just be cheaper and easier in the long run to send your man to law school ... think about it Joanne!
