I'm not saying they're not out there, I'm just saying I think "every other" is an exaggeration.  It might be approaching a majority, but I don't see that it's there yet.  30% maybe?  After the Comcast rate hikes hit in January, Sam may be more accurate in his assumption (and I'll be looking to add to the dish numbers),  but I think he's pulling his figures out of his ass right now.

Spreaking of vomiting, I threw up a little in my mouth after this mental picture to which he treated his minions.  Joe, is that supposed to be motivating?  Better double your prescription.  Bets on an upcoming edit?

<putting hand up> I am guilty as charged lol lol.   Dish here.  I agree Paul the cost is close to or maybe even less, at this point or in the near future, than cable.  I don't think the amount of people with the dish is as high as Sam thinks, but it's going in that direction.  Actually I am suprised the channel 61 people haven't asked for a public access channel on the dish.  I thought I read, at some point, that a certain amount of channels have to be avaible for public access.  Is that a faulty memory of mine or does that just apply to cable?  lol lol I have said before old age doesn't come alone.

With Christmas ... I was a bit tooooo busy for a trip to DD ... yes even so early in the morning ... ok with Christmas I didn't want to make very many trips there ... I was trying to catch the spirit of Christmas and I know that if I hung around there toooooooo much I would never catch the spirit of Christmas ... so anyway ... here goes ... my trip for today!

OK so I find this to be a beautiful picture and I admire the soldier so much ... I have family that recently returned home from the Middle East so I do honestly love the thought in which this picture was created.  However as you will see in this post ... I could scream ... because I just don't think that Joanne and Joe get anything ... they are the biggest offenders in that they deny the freedom of speech on a daily basis ... and they think that Judy and Sherry will learn from this ... get a clue Joey and Joanne ... you take a good look ... and you learn form it ... practice what you preach ... take a look!

What do you all think of this particular post ... I think it's a beautiful picture ... however ... I just think it's sick that the Pilchesky's would exploit it when they are the biggest offenders when it comes to the denial of the Freedom of Speech!  Sorry rambling again!

4.9% tax increase by the SSD for next year. Selling a school property that is owned by the taxpayers. Relocating a principal in a better position with higher pay after disgracing the school district and his family. Spending multi millions on a high school when the teacher have to work with 10 year old books.

We should learn from N. Pocono citizens. They are giving a fight against a new school. They're hanging on like pit bulls and won't let the board go through with it without a battle of all battles.

What's been said about the taxpayers of Scranton seems to be true. They are sheep. They can complain all they want about school taxes but to have three people at a board meeting? They get what they deserve and they deserve what they get. Sometimes you can't blame the ICN for taking advantage of the situation, since these people won't fight for themselves.

 *  OK again ... the Relocating of that particular principal ... yes he did get what one might think of as a promotion ... but where in the world are you getting that he got a pay raise ... I will say this again ... he got a position that he receives about $700 per month less in take home pay ... and get this ... he went from working 215 days per year to working 261 days per year ... so now ... how do you Oh Wise One figure that he is getting more money ... that is why you chose the name truthslayer isn't it ... because you will slay the truth at every turn.

 *  Check your fact before you write something over the past 3 years I believe the Scranton School District has been replacing all of the textbooks ... Wrong again ... that's crazy how you don't check your facts.

 *  Do you not remember the battle that raged for approximately 2 - 3 years involving the building of the New High School ... they were hanging on like pit bulls ... hell Fay Franus couldn't have held tighter if she tried ... Peggy Paris gave a fight like you wouldn't believe ... Lee Morgan was there .... They even got together their own team of School Directors ... Peggy Paris, Bob Marino, James Minicozzi, and they didn't stop the project as they promised they would ... instead the names of each are on a dedication plaque located in the main concourse of the New Scranton High School ... so much for the leaders that are picked by the likes of Fay and Lee ... I remember this ... I was a voice at the meetings ... I used to attend on a regular basis ... the Council meetings also ... I just don't like the fact that TV cameras are present now ... and what they have turned these meetings into ... so now I watch on TV.

Enough for today ... I have to go jump in the shower ... have a great day all ....

Yeah, 'Truthslayer' really does kill the truth. What an f^%$ing moron!! Has this idiot...

...ever met Mr McTiernan? Ever had to deal with him on a professional level?
My oldest daughter had him as principal at South Intermediate for three years and then for four years at Scranton High School (he moved to SHS her freshman year). In those seven years, I can honestly say that he was always very respectful, very professional and always exceptionally helpful to myself and my wife. I was extremely impressed with him on the few occiasions when we had to meet or when we would talk informally. He knew my daughter by name (and no, I am not politically connected, powerful, etc.) and ALWAYS made a point of keeping on top of what she was doing at school. Did this guy make some personal mistakes? Yes, but who in this life has not???????? His mistakes are between him, God and his wife. Anyone else should mind their own damn business.

...ever step foot in the old high school? Ever step foot in the new high school?
The old Scranton High School was a disgrace. The new Scranton High School is one of the best secondary education facilites in the STATE. I've had out of town guests see it and walk away marveling at the facility, wishing that their communities were progressive enough to make such an investment in their children's future. Had 'foam at the mouth' Fay Franus had her way, my children would be attending one of the oldest, most out of date educational facilities int he state.

Speaking of Fay...I'm still searching for the elderly who are starving and made homeless just because Scranton built a new high school. Guess what Fay? You were WRONG. You just used the new high school as an opportunity to play your role as self-appointed Brown Shirt, fighting against any progress in this city. Guess what Fay? You LOST. Now calm the hell down, wipe the foam away from your mouth, and go back to advocating for dog rights.

...ever been to North Pocono High School?

I've never stepped foot in the place. So guess what???? I'm not qualified to comment on whether or not they need a new high school. The difference between myself and the LoD/DD Brain Trust is that I'm smart enough to think before I open my pie hole. I'll bet dollars to donuts that 'Truthslayer' have never been to North Pocono High School either.

The sheer, utter ignorance of these people is nothing short of astounding.

Overheard: Call between the Pentagon and Chumster

Pent: We're getting a lot of heat over here over the Pilchesky site. The Times-Tribune has been getting scooped, the Scranton powers are worried that Pilchesky is having an impact on the plans we had for the Electric City

Chum: How can we help?

Pent: Well we know that slowing the servers down didn't work, Louis DeNaples been calling every day - he's got Rummy's personal line. We may have to shut it down.

Chum: But what about the rest of the world? Chumster services and hosts message boards from every spot on the globe.

Pent: Collateral damage. We can't afford to let Scranton slip away. If we lose Scranton, we lose Lackawanna County. It will be a domino effect until Chris Doherty is the new Ho Chi Mihn or Moa Tse Tung. We need to stop this now. Shut it down,

Chum: Dear lord, we never realized the ramifications of letting Pilchesky have his free message board. I only hope we're not to late. The future of the world is at stake.

Pent: Now your thinking. Say, do you guys know anyone over at Sparklit?

I will say that I believe the SSD squanders money on useless things and does not spend wisely, which is why tax increases really anger me.  As to whether the new high school should have been built, I don't know, I didn't even live in Scranton at the time, but I will say that LJC has restored Central HS to one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.  My opinion is that Central should never have been closed.  At the time they closed Central, they said they didn't need all the space, and then all of a sudden, they're overcrowded.  Someone had their proverbial head up their arse on that one, or the new school was planned from that time on.  To me, the new building is ugly.  It may be state of the art, but architecturally, its hideous.  It looks like it was bought from the set of a Star Trek movie.  In a city that has amazing architecture, SHS stands out like a sore thumb.  And it funny how one school can be state of the art, and the district someone thinks its a wise use of our tax money to sink millions into the football stadium, yet our elementary schools are in absolutely DEPLORABLE condition.  Our elementary schools are an embarrassment.  Look at Sumner Elementary in West Side.  The building is not all that old, built in the late 60's to early 70's, but its been completely neglected.  the facade of the school is literally falling apart, the "playground" area hasn't been resurfaced in years....all of the cracks and potholes are going to seriously hurt some little kid one of these days.  And Sumner is not the only one....its the same story at most of the grade schools, and its a disgrace.

The school district needs new leadership, both in the administration and the school board.

I've more than once blasted the Scranton School District for it's spending habits and oftentimes lack of professional leadership, but in my opinion about the only smart thing they have done is to build the new Scranton High School. As for the elementary schools, they are just now starting to make some investments in rennovations that have been long over due....overdue because of inept leadership in the past and an unwillingness to make needed investments in maintenance and building programs. But this is what you get when the district is led, and let's be honest here, by people who in at least some instances are more interested in furthering political careers than in leading a school district. Why our very own Janet Evans seems to have used her tenure on the Scranton School Board for that very same purpose.

As for the former Scranton Central HS, I am glad that it was bought and restored by Lackawanna College. They have truly taken a turd and polished it into a diamond. With their work, the city kept a grand old building and Lackawanna College is now poised for growth in the downtown area, a win for everyone. As for the option of keeping Central opened as a high school, I have my doubts, as it was so antiquated (lack of a real gym, lack of no real lunch facilities, no parking, no nearby atheletic facilites, etc.) that the amount of construction required to make it state of the art (for a high school) would seem to have been very high. So on balance, I think the whole Central sale/Lackawanna College purchase as a good move by a district administration which has a very poor track record.

As for how the new SHS looks, architecture, like most forms of art is subjective in terms of the aesthetic. While Sam may not like it (but I can see the Star Trek analogy), I rather do like how it looks. We have so many beautiful older buildings in Scranton (in my home office I have a drawing of the GAR building...a structure that I find striking) that I think a fewer newer structures help to add constrast to the city's architectural landscape.

What? My hero was opposed to the new High School? But I thought that Harry Truman was dead long before it was even considered!

Note to Anonymous...at this board, unlike DD, we can disagree on things and it doesn't turn into a 'hate-for-all'. Why don't you go over to DD and try and post someting that runs counter to the dictate of 'Dear Leader' Joe Pilchesky? Talk about hero worship....DD has become a Cult of Personality.

I think the scholl district does a wonderful job. I think LJC was the best thing to ever happen to the old central building, there was no way that could have been an updated high school.

The school district has to have a balanced budget every year by law. That explains the constant tax increases. This is something the city should consider instead of playing political games with one time revenues and borrowing. Perhaps a steady dose of reasonable tax inreases is the answer rather then the smoke and mirror budgets to protect the slefish image of politicains who can say "I didn't raise taxes", or "I'll run the city like a business".

I didn't mean to be insulting or trying to start any arguments over my dislike of Scranton High's architecture, issues like architecture is a matter of personal taste and nothing more.  I spent my childhood at schools that were all newer and modern (built in the 70s), and I found them to be sterile and devoid of any character.  I love the older buildings and how ornate they are.

Anyways, is the GAR building the one that houses the Metro Lounge or whatever its called now?

Does anyone know if the proper permissions have been secured to repost copyrighted material in their entirety in the "Impeachment" thread at DD?  Surely the legal genius that is the old man is fully aware of copyright laws, and that simply attatching the copyright notice at the end does not give one the right to post it in toto

I am neither a lawyer nor a serial plantiff, but I believe that linking to the article or posting a few lines with proper attribution is allowed, but re-posting the entire article without permisson violates US copyright laws.

Sure would be funny if the old man got sued over this...the irony would be almost unbearable.

I believe I have begged for someone to do that in an earlier thread on the old Chumster/CIA/DeNaples board.

You're right, it is illegal and someone should sue.

The only thing saving Joe (much to his dismay) is the simple fact that no one outside of the Pentagon and Sunset St give a rats ass about his website. The Times has bigger fish to fry. He's a minnow.

According to the City of Pittsburgh's website, "A friend and colleague of former Mayor Bob O’Connor, Mayor Ravenstahl is honored to continue in his mentor’s footsteps and is committed to moving forward with the initiatives envisioned by Mayor O’Connor."

O'Connor...There's a nice Irish name.  Maybe Mayor Ravenstahl is an honorary Irishman.  He's Roman Catholic, too, BTW.  Has the ICN infiltrated the rest of the state?

Yeah, sure would be fun to see the old man get at least a cease and desist order.

Sam, absolutely no offense or insult taken. I admire anyone who has an eye for architecture...be it good or bad. Oh yes, the GAR building houses some kind of lounge. Even better though is the GAR museum on the top floor. I was there once as a kid...very interesting, although I think you need an appointment to see the collection.

Paul ... I don't know that old Joey P. would find it quite as funny as you and I would ... I do believe as far as educational purposes anyway that you are allowed to copy 10% or 2,500 words whichever comes first ... and the fine for this falls upon the person who infringes upon the copyright ... When we take an entire article ... we could possibly be taking away the livelihood of the author of the material being copied ... now as far as music is concerned this is not to be copied at all ... certain things cannot be copied at all and you are only allowed so many instances of copying throughout a year ... The last I knew the fine was $15,000 with the possibility of 2 years jail time for breaking the copyright laws ... it's a chance to take ... I'm sure Joey P knows the law ... I will have to look that one up ... and post it here for everyone to see ... so I know that nobody here will be breaking this law ... we don't want any trouble with copyrights here.

Joey is under the impression that the Scranton Times is terrified of hime and the DD posters along with the LoD speakers of council ... what he does not realize is simply this ... Joey calls for a boycott ... well people like me we go out and ... buy the paper ... I'm going to suscribe in the New Year because I need to keep up on things for this place ... and yeah I know that I could very well click and read it online ... but hell if Joey says don't subscribe ... well how bad can this paper be?

Ramble .... Ramble ... Ramble ....   Sorry Gang I did it again!

According to the US Copyright Office, "The distinction between “fair use” and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission."

Joe may argue that his site is "educational", but one only has to read Granma's posts and that defense is shot to hell.  An educational site allows for the free exchange of ideas, and the old man's site clearly does not.  His site is a political propaganda site, nothing more.  He may think he has some legal standing, but his perfect record locally shows that he knows Jack Schmidt about having legal standing.

WHile the responsibility for any sort of fine may lie with the poster, I think the old man, as the Administrator of the site, bears some responsibility to edit posts for content.  He should edit the post to remain in the clear.  The link to the article is there, anyway.

I don't think it'll come to that, though.  A fine and prison in this case is fighting a fly with a flamethrower.  I expect he'll get his comeuppance in a stinging letter from a Pittsburgh Tribune attorney and nothing more.  One who actually went to Law School.

I agree that in the big picture, he's small time.  But, if has been alleged, he's making this a habit, then someone needs to slap him down a peg legally.

While I am not against a smoking ban I can see the upset of business owners if their loyal customers leave because they cannot smoke in their establishments ... I can understand that and I am sure that it may hurt some businesses ... but ... I do think that in the end the business will flow back to these businesses simply because more level headed people will think about the possibility of getting a DUI ... the price of gas ... which is not cheap as all drivers know ... so some points in this post are valid concerns for the business people of Scranton ...

Quote | ReplyRE: Smoking Ban lawsuit filed - review it here

Judge Della Vecchia is not squeemish, he's intelligent enough to know that this issue should not be decided at a local level. In fact, a quote from the article says:...

"It is not fair to the people of Pennsylvania to place such an important issue ... in the realm of legal nitpicking. Implementation of [the county ban] places in confrontation public health issues versus individual rights. The debate on said issues [belongs] on the floor of the Legislature, not a courtroom."

The Judge realizes that this issue will likely end up on the floor of the PA Supreme Court, and his actions allow for it to procede there more quickly.

A smoking ban in a municipality will hurt the local business owners, as opposed to a state-wide ban. If the smoking ban continues in Scranton, it is not unrealistic  to assume patrons will travel to Dunmore, or Dickson City, Taylor, Moosic, Old Forge, Clarks Summit, etc., etc, to avoid the ban. It will likely increase the amount of people drinking and driving on the road. If the ban were state wide, that is unlikely.

I can see this posters point actually ... a state wide ban would be the ideal situation ... hopefully PA will ban smoking in all buildings that are open to the general public.  And as I have stated that it is my belief that the more level headed person will not Risk a DUI ... but when you think about it if you drink in Scranton and live in Scranton ... you are still subject to DUI's if you are driving your vehicle ... so is that really a valid point to make ... it's just that you are not drinking and driving from town to town.  So what is the point here?

Heck, while Council is at it, they should consider banning alcohol sales in the City. If Scranton were "dry" we could eliminate lot's of DUI's. Let's ban loud music in restaurants and bars, too, I think it's causing me second hand deafness. We can't forget fatty foods in restaurants either. I've noticed eating rich food causes obesity...let's ban it. Hey here's a good one! Ban all soft drinks in public schools. Kids can drink milk, or juice or water. I'm certain that sugary, carbonated beverages are linked to weight problems. We could have our kids at least have healthy food while in school.

While some of these ideas may seem laughable, (except for the banning soda in public schools), they all have legitimate basis for public health. The bottom line is that all these issues should be an individual's choice, and not determined by some local governing body. You cannot legislate common sense!

Council will not ban alcohol sales in the city of Scranton ... that is just plain ridiculous ... and Fast Food ... well maybe they should ... I know it would help me out a lot if I didn't have it readily available to me ... I really could stand to loose some weight ... but as far as the banning of soda ... well where have you been that has been in effect for almost 2 years now ... Soda is not something that is available to the students of the Scranton School District ... Even sugary Ice Tea was banned ... so ... that has already happened but it did not happen because of City Council ... that happened because of the Wellness policy of the Scranton School District ...

You say it should be an individuals choice ... but you forget about the individuals who choose not to smoke ... what is the right of that person?  Why is it my right to pollute the air of another individual ... yep that's right I am a SMOKER!  I have always tried to be a courteous smoker ... always asked if the person with me or next to me ... if the smoke would bother them ... if they said yes then I don't smoke ... it's that simple.  I do not have the right to make them sick!   Your (my) right to smoke does not supersede another's right to breathe -- that statement made Bob McGoff really hit home for me ... I know that I can live without smoking ... but the people around me cannot live without breathing ... and how rude of me to subject them to my smoke ... this ban was not something that was brought about just to pick on the smokers ... it was brought about for the greater good of our citizens.  I do not believe that anyone is trying to legislate COMMON SENSE!

Sorry Rambling again!

I know the address, thank you. Is that an invitation? Ban me if you like, that's what you do when someone comes at you and you don't like it. Hypocrite. You can dish it out but you can't take it. Am I sensing a little insecurity problem Pilchesky?

One-on-one work for you?

Come at me all you want, me and anyone else, but we're looking for factual information and not your offering of childish crying. Maybe I can kickstart something credible for you in order to pull you over the fence far enough to do some of that man-to-man stuff you're craving. Why don't you tell us what the 14.5 million is being used for that Gatelli put into the Agenda in the form of two TANs. We don't know. We both have to pay that 14.5 mil back, so consider yourself invested. I personally could care less if you do it over the phone (341-8005), by email, on this message board or by knocking on my door.

While we're chatting, you tell your mayor to fix the collar on his shirt, his political jugular looks a little more vulnerable than ususal. The clock ticks away, Jeremy. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide and not much bull**** left to shovel or stack. Judy faces five months of blistering confrontation and extremely public thrashing for her role in the Doherty/Lynett Monopoly game. SHE WILL NOT PASS GO, AND NEITHER WILL HER HUSBAND.

Guess what I know about, Jeremy? A top shelf local Professor (Abingtons) who got sick while away and came home a day early. Guess who was in his hot tub making out with his wife when he got home? Calm down, I won't be dropping that one anytime soon. It's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too heavy and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too early. Is that a chill running up and down your back or are you happy to see me.

Get that info for us on the 14.5 mil like a good little boy and we'll see if we can find it in our hearts to let you play here a little more. Kiss Judy Gatelli's fat ass good-bye. She's the next to play and win the Resignation Game. And you, or any of your cave dwelling maggots, can do nothing to stop it from happening. It's 'Pop goes the Weasel' for the betrayer from south side! She's been set up, bought the ticket and the justice cometh.

Looks like a bit of blackmail to me ... the highlighted areas are what I am talking about ... What do you all think?

I hate to resort to this kind of language, but that last post proves that Joe Pilchesky is nothing more than a bullying scum-bag.

A bullying scum-bag who rarely, if ever, follows through on his threats and promises. Remember that lawsuit against our administrator? The lawsuit against the nepa media message board? The promises of all of those lawsuit victories. Guarentees of election wins and losses?

I've asked it before, I'll ask it again - other than give the angry union workers in Scranton a place to vent, what specifically has he accomplished?

It's one thing to rip the mayor or the administration a new one - but it pisses me off that he is dragging the city down in the meantime.  What good does he think he is accomplishing with all this bull$hit? Certainly isn't helping the city one little bit.
