Does anyone have the breakdown of the recent Police and Fire Department Pay Raises.  I hear they happen every 6 months from January 2011 through December 2014.  Big pay differentials also, howcome no one is  talking about this on DD ?????

Because talking about it wouldn't glorify Pilchesky's ego.

Because if they talk about it they can no longer go around saying the Mayor hasn't given them a raise in over 8 years ... that's why you won't see it on DD.

You people are awake at such a refreshingly early hour.

When the full effect of both the raises and the court awards is felt in the budget (two or three years from now), the entire city financial structure will implode.  It is a matter of when, not if.  You won't hear about it on DD because many of the people who post there are the ones who appeared at the council meeting to scare the residents.

Do you think it is also because frankly they are not too bright?? I happen to agree with you about the budget but I can actually do simple math. That is the only skill you need to pocess to know that when you spend more than you make you are in deep do do!

Hey Glenn that's what happens as you get older you find out that the best part of the day is early in the morning. Besides I'm in training for the early bird specials ... they are not that far off for me! If I am going to eat dinner at 3 PM well it's got to feel like dinner time. LOL

What do you feel their intent was to scare the residents?  Do you believe that Scranton needs less firemen and policemen?  Don't you think that there were valid concerns?

For the record, I don't think the fire or police members had anything to do with the tragic financial state of the city of Scranton.  When Chris Doherty spent millions on the parks, and building new complexes for the DPW and cops, he spent money that Scranton did not have.  He pushed the debt forward so the city debt service went from an annual 5% of the total budget to almost 19% of the total budget.

Finally, do you think the firemen and cops should not have gotten a raise?  I'm quite sure their wages, even with the raises, are lower than comporable sized cities in Pennsylvania.

The financial structure of the city may implode, but Chris Doherty's career will implode with it.  He's hoping to be out of Scranton before the bill comes due.

I do believe their intent was to scare the residents.  Obviously, a fire station and police car on every block is ideal, but the city's budget cannot sustain these expenses much longer.  Thus, they were looking out solely for their own best interests under the guise of "putting taxpayers first".  I haven't seen a public safety member at the podium since concerning any issue.

There were valid concerns.  However, the whole mess was a dog and pony show.  Telling senior citizens that the mayor is going to cause them to die in a fire is scare tactics.

Public safety consumes a good deal of financial resources.  I do not disagree that the mayor has been a financial disaster and has unfairly attempted to shaft the unions and break contracts, but everybody has to play along when the budget gets to the point of collapse.

Finally, do you think the firemen and cops should not have gotten a raise?  I'm quite sure their wages, even with the raises, are lower than comporable sized cities in Pennsylvania.

I don't think they are lower.  In any event, I have always believed in competitive wages and benefits.

The financial structure of the city may implode, but Chris Doherty's career will implode with it.  He's hoping to be out of Scranton before the bill comes due.

If the upcoming court decisions cause financial calamity in the city, and the residents discover that the annual salary of a police officer or firefighter is substantially higher than has been presented, the unions will be vilified almost immediately.  Teachers unions are no better, and their day is coming soon as well.

I agree about the dog and pony show.  Now that the show is over, the taxpayers are left to clean up the mess left behind.

As far as wages, I can't speak honestly about the firemen, but I do know that cops now make close to the same salary as Hazleton police and Wilkes Barre police, and less than Allentown and Bethlehem police.

When the financial crisis comes due in the coming months, all city workers will be vilified. For the record, I believe the city will soon have to compensate the police union about one million dollars back wages for an award concerning clerks, and untold many millions of dollars for back pay for firemen and cops.

What will it entail for Scranton to file for bankruptcy?  I see no other possible future.
