I have plenty of questions regarding the opening of the 2010 budget by this soon to be famous or maybe infamous City Council, but I will just start with one major one.
They are waiving thier flags that they are saving the City from distruction by eliminating salaries and 32 jobs. In one department alone, the City's parking meter division alone brings in 1.8 million dollars of revenue each year. So if the brilliant council people eliminate all the meter readers, who will be issuing the parking tickets ? I think the wounder kids on council should suit up and sharpen their pencils, because where I went to school, 1.8 million lost, less the big savings that council is hanging their hat on is 670.00 - 720.000, leaving a balance of approx. 1.2 million of lost revenue to the city coffers. Lets hear her explain that one away while she continues to claim victory.
Time will tell.

Janet is a vindictive bitch and averyone knows it.
Yeah, she's gonna do what she wants, unchecked, and won't find a thing wrong with it because her last name isn't Doherty.
She's going to slash salaries simply because they were hired by Doherty.
She's going to create positions for her cronies (almost negating the salary cuts she made) but that's okay because her last name isn't Doherty. Seriously, a secretary to a city clerk? Are you f*cking kidding me??
She's going to give the Council Solicitor a $3000 raise, but that's okay because he wasn't hired by Doherty.
Nothing she's done to this point is more than blowing smoke, and token actions that will do NOTHING at all to benefit the city. She's a joke of a councilwoman, she's a bitter, angry witch, and she's a spiteful fraud.
Folks, Janet Evans DOES NOT walk on water. Wake the hell up already. She's no better than any other politician, but if you'd all take your lips off her ass enough to step back and take a look at her "accomplishments", you might notice that.
And you thought Doherty served some tasty kool-aid...
I never thought that I would say this but I think that Lee Morgan made a very valid point when he spoke at last evenings council meeting ... he asked that they look very carefully that the position eliminations ... make very sure that they would actually end up saving money and not costing the city money in the end. He also wanted to know why they are taking away a Grant for the Everhart ... now tell me that wasn't a sly move on her part to get back at Doherty ... she did that because she knows how much he cares about Nay Aug and the Everhart ...
She wants to get rid of the Director of Parks and Recreation ... why?
Now I ask this since we are a strong Mayor form of government here in Scranton ... does city council have the power ... even with her super majority ... to eliminate positions? And can she just eliminate the Director of Parks and Recreation without the OK of the Recreation Authority?
Oh and did anyone see Les Spindlers brilliant suggestion? We should do away with the Sewer Authority ... why? because we have already established sewer service so they are no longer needed ... now I ask this ... who will maintain the sewer lines and who will bill and collect what is owed? Brilliant suggestion Mr. Spindler ... just brilliant!

And just to add this ... an afterthought ... Why does Nancy Krake need a secretary? No other City Clerk had a secretary ... Nancy can't do the job ... then Nancy should give it up to someone who can do the job ... Bring back Kay Garvey!

Apples and oranges if the director is not employed by the authority.
As for the authority's borrowing rules...they can enter into financial transactions on their own and keep the city on the hook. Of course, collateral and ability to repay is necessary...
Its about time we bring the finances in order in this city I think council is the only one with the guts to do so . This mayor is a typical borrow and spend liberal. who must be brought under control. Let these people who are getting eliminated get real jobs like everyone else has to . I won't miss them.

Thank you Glenn I was not sure how that worked. I really appreciate your reply.
As to Knight Riders response I would say that I still agree with Mr. Morgan that these positions should be looked into to see what exactly it is they do before just making the decision to lop them off. Make sure that the city will be saving money and not end up paying out more in the end. I don't often agree with Mr. Morgan but I must say this he is always polite and he does make a lot of sense ... so I would hope that they look closely at each position before getting rid of them ...
And for God sakes don't take money away from the Everhart ... that will serve no good purpose to take away GRANT Money from them.

Aren't those the EXACT SAME WORDS that Janet Evans used, as quoted in the paper?
Come on Knight...at least make an effort to sound original. If parroting Janet Evans is the best you can do, well then you're gonna run out of ammo...and credibility...very quickly.
"Of course, collateral and ability to repay is necessary..."
Thanks for the affirmation Glenn. If a Library Authority wasn't legally able to use it's facilities as collateral, and it had no other assets, then it wouldn't in fact be able to borrow without konsil's approval.
Repeat after me: This is a political, not a fiscal move.

I think that I stated in a round about way that I agree with you on this one Taylor ... it is something that needs to be looked at further ... this is what Lee Morgan was saying to them at the Council meeting ... he just about begged them to look into the positions that they were cutting because in the end it was going to cost them much more than they would be saving ... but the point that most posters are trying to make in the thread is that Janet will do what Janet wants to do ... some will say it's because she has balls and is willing do do what needs to be done ... what nobody else had the balls to do ... and then there are those of us who look at it as something more than just cutting the jobs of the so called cronies ... we are in agreement with you that this is going to cost the city big in the long run.
It does not make sense to cut this department ... no sense at all when they are bringing in revenue ... but she is going to do it anyway and when the taxes have to be raised because Janet and her supermajority cut all of the positions that actually are making money then what? Will all of her adoring fans still love her ... hmmmm this is not a good thing that is about to happen. Most of us here at PD knew no good would come from this supermajority. Imagine all of the trouble that is about to come down on our fair city over the next 2 years.
