First off I would like to thank ya'll for allowing me to post on your site!  I really appreciate it.

I heard the little birdies talking and well ya'll will be surprised to hear that Aramark will be awarded the food service contract for the Scranton School District.  This wouldn't be a bad thing, but, yes ther is always a but.

Aramark reserves the right to dismiss the employees, they will all have to interview for the jobs that they already have.  And ya'll may or may not like this, they are claiming that they can feed the kiddies for a mere 29 cents per child.  How does this be accomplished?  What the helll kind of food are they going to serve to our kiddies.

In these harsh economic times will they toss out our beloved lunch ladies on their collective asses, the could.  But why do this to these ladies who have been more than dedicated to the Scranotn School District.

Ask Tom Gilbride, why he and Brian Jeffers would want to put these fine ladies out of a job.

(I'm sorry but I can't afford to lose my job, and I just don't what the hell they expect us to serve your children when they only plan on spending 29 cents per kiddie)

Welcome to PD WhereHaveYouBeen.  I hope you enjoy posting here.

To your point, I normally think that no should have a guaranteed right to employment...for example, I should have my job because I prove day in and day out I prove that I'm the best person for it.  But you know what?  I think when it comes to something like this...lunchroom ladies...then there really has to be some consideration made for protecting jobs.  We're not talking about high salaires, and quite frankly, I think kids grow accustomed to the people who serve them lunch.  It seems reasonable to me that the District should at least try to protect the employment of existing non-management staff.  In my mind unions exist in part because employers treat employees like office supplies (that can be just thrown out when not wanted) instead of valued resources.

Alas, we are talking about the Scranton School Board, a legislative body not know for its legislative prowess.

As for the $0.29 per child, well I suppose that anything is possible.  They're not exactly serving fillet mignon in school cafeterias, although I'd get worried if you find a rat tail in the mac-n-cheese [Rat:  the other-other white meat].

Thank you for the welcome!!!!!

I do get what it is ya'll are tryn to say, I just don't think that the lunch ladies should have to re interview for the jobs they already have. Evaluate them, but re interview. Agamemon do you have to periodically re interview for your job?

I agree with you Where ... I would not want to have to interview in order to retain my job. But I do see what Ag is saying also... remember Ag these ladies don't make much money at all and then to have it hanging over thier heads that .... maybe they won't have a job next school year.

I also don't see how it is at all possible to feed a child for 29 cents when the cost of milk is 26 cents. What kind of food are our children going to be fed? .... and rat's tails are not acceptable Ag .... Yuck ... actually double yuck!!

I completely sympathize with you but (and I hope you will take this in the tone it is intended just friendly advise) if you really want to be treated at least fairly the public sector is not where you want to be...as a political hire (I am not saying you are not qualified just that politicians are ultimately in charge hiring either directly or indirectly everthing inside the public school system) you are unfortunaly at the mercy of a bunch of politicians.. not exactly a secure location in my mind.  I recommend trying to get into a part of the system covered by a union or start looking outside the system.  You may not be any more secure but you will at least have the comfort of knowing it isn't because some politician has made a "deal" which costs you.  :(

If my employer were bought by another company there is a chance that I would have to re-interview for my current job...that or they would just tell me I could keep it or not (and really not even give me the opportunity to state my case in an interview).

The concept is called "employment at will".  These days there is simply no such thing as a guaranteed job.

Oh, and by the way, I was actually being sympathetic to the lunch-ladies.
