Well its that time of year again, and the political signs are popping up everywhere. Mayor Doherty is canvasing door to door in west side. Dibileo is nowhere to be seen. Signs are going up as if they are growing in the yards. Don't ya just love this time of year. But remember.. SIGNS Don't VOTE.

You are correct on that one Doomers. Nobody knows what anyone else is going to do when they get to the poll ... so just because you have a DiBileo or a Doherty sign ... well it means nothing. What matters is who gets bubbled in on election day. Only time will tell.

Where we once pulled a lever ... we now bubble! I liked the old machines but times change and technology ... oh that's right now we use a pen and paper! LOL

Commonsense will prevail, Doherty will win by 10 percent. The reason for this is, he is doing everything he promised, the Democratic Party is not happy that they can not control him. They want politics the old way, the public will see this and vote for the peoples candidate.. Mayor Doherty "4 more years"

Ok ... but what do you think about bubbling vs. the old machines Taylor? I am voting for Mayor Doherty by the way ... in case you didn't know!

We will see, Taylor....LOTS of people are mad at Doherty. The "Keep my firehouse open signs" are killing him. 10%?....now you are dreaming last time he won by 4.5%. I personally know at least 20 people who have flipped on him. If he is so wonderful,,,,,,,I challange anyone to give me 14 things (2 per year) that he accomplished. PLEASE leave out the parks,he ran on that non sense last time. also list 15 public events (no campaign parties) Doherty attended. Dibileo is not my favorite pick but 8 years of union busting and arrogance is enough.

Doherty may well win by 10%, but as far as doing everything he "promised", unless you are talking about political contributors, I would disagree.
Here are a few "promises" Doherty made that remain unfulfilled: - Lowering the wage tax. (same oppressive 3.4%) - Not balancing the budget with one time revenue sources. (see golfcourse sale; south side complex sale; sewer deal; and the 5.5 million dollar tax office blunder) - Honoring union contracts. (dozens of arbitrations against city) - Running the city like a business. (increasing the size of government in a city with a shrinking tax base is fiscally unsound. The budget has increased over 50% since Doherty took over) - Lifting the distressed status. (Scranton is financially worse off now than it was in 1992 when the distressed label was first applied.)
In Doherty's favor will be the park system improvements, and the downtown building improvements.
I predict a very close race. Doherty has a huge edge with money, and Dibileo has an edge with the incumbent flushing that has become fashionable of late.
Doherty has knowingly led Scranton down a path towards financial distruction with the huge borrowing debt. Sadly, Dibileo is not the man to fix the mess and could unknowingly make it worse.
All I know is my neighborhood has made a complete turnaround since Chris Doherty took office. I noticed on my way into work today, many many many political signs (in approximately a ten block range) and I saw ONE countem ONE yard with a "Dibilio" sign and a "keep our firehouses" sign among a sea of re-elect Doherty signs. Granted, this may change in the next few weeks before election day ... but for today, the proof was there.
Someone upthread asked for 14 (?) rreasons to relect Doherty?? I only need one -- our neighborhood children can play outside and we don't have the constant fear that some doper is going to approach them. We aren't rolling in dough, but we pay our taxes and don't bitch about it. Our house might be considered the dumpiest one on the block, but the taxes get paid, the snow gets shovelled, the flowers get planted and the grass gets cut. Because of Mayor Chris Doherty, we don't have to worry about finding crack vials, needles and someone else's garbage in our yard.
Chris -- you've got our votes. Gary -- stick to west side. If you can't clean up the nonsense taking place over there, how are you going to tackle the entire city?
I don't know where you live "Girl Thursday", so I can't accurately comment on the state of your neighborhood. I can say the neighborhood where my parents reside, which is South Scranton, has gone downhill, and is getting worse. Even with motion sensor lights, and two deadbolts on doors, they feel like prisoners in their own home. For a variety of reasons, now is not the time to sell the house.
I'm glad you take pride in your home and live in a safe neighborhood. However, I doubt Doherty had anything to do with the safety, since his rapport with the police is non-existent. The credit for low crime is because of the police themselves. Any tough enforcement on drug dealers/users cannot be traced back to the mayor. He is the one who eliminated the minimum manning on each shift, remember?
Let's be honest here: the union demanded staffing minimums at least in part to keep their members employed. I am sure that they also cared about crime and safety, but that's not the only rationale for a minimum manning clause. Like a lot of things in Scranton municipal labor relations, this is as much about control as it is anything else. The Fire Department scheduling is another example...they care as much about keeping their side jobs as they do anything else.
As for safety, I live in South Scranton and my neighborhood is very safe. I won't give Doherty all the credit for that, but I don't give him all the blame for the parts of South Side that have crime either.

Thats the price of leadership..... despite usally having little to do with the outcomes when things go good you get the glory when they go poorly you get the blame. So saying if crime is low it is because the police are doing a good job (which they are) but if crime is high it is the mayors fault just doesn't float. Either the police will receive the glory and the blame or they will receive neither.... pick your place.
When I made my comments, I certainly did not intend to take any of the credit away from our police and fire departments. If my comments were construed that way, I truly apologize. They are the backbone of our city and they certainly do their best to keep each of us safe and secure - no matter WHERE you live.
That being said, our neighborhood is much safer since Chris Doherty was elected to office. Jimmy Connors and his rendition of "Johnnie B Good" only went so far on the Clean and Safe meter. Before Chris Doherty took office, the Scranton Police were dispatched to our neighborhood at least once a week - for YEARS.
One thing I noticed about the 'firehouse' signs. Not every yard that has a 'firehouse' sign in it has a Dibilio sign. Well, we all want the firehouses to remain open, but to me, it seems as though some people still will vote for Doherty. I'm seeing Doherty signs out there 4 to 1.
We do all want our firehouses, and yet you are right we do not all want Gary DiBileo. Strange isn't it, but oh so true. There is just something about that Gary that rubs me the wrong way, and his politics are dirty as they get, he just uses other people to do his dirty work so he can say his hands are clean. That's what he did last time round and that's what he is doing this time round.
.........and his politics are dirty as they get, he just uses other people to do his dirty work so he can say his hands are clean. .......
Hummmmmmmm perhaps why he seems to get along so well with Missy Jan....she is a great one for getting others to do her dirty work...can anyone say...Daveyboy Joeyboy Fay??
Well, I guess that's why he and Missy Jan ... are such fast friends!!!!

I certainly agree signs don't vote but the fact is the person who demonstates a wide availabilty of sign locations tends to win......doherty had more sign locations last time than Gary ,.....he won!! It appears to be the same this time also...
Doomers I am sensing a lot of anger in you ... is an election really worthin hating people over? Is it really worth losing friendships with people ... because when it gets right down to it no matter who wins/looses ... life will go on for us the way it always does. You will still have to get up the day after the election .. go to work ... take care of your family ... and believe it or not ... no matter the outcome the world will not cease to turn ... You are a DiBileo supporter ... and I am not angry about that ... I am a Doherty supporter and well I sense anger in your posts.

I am far from angry....however what drives me crazy is when people assume that when you dislike Doherty there is an underlying reason....because he is able to prt the red see, and "turn Nayaug park around" he is so terrific. To me personally it won't affedt me one bit who loses the election. I have no vested intrest, in either canidate. I am just sick of the B.S that Doherty spews. Dibileo is far from the best pick....but I will take him at this point. cause the last 8 years haven't worked....sorry if I don't like in the land of Hatchy Milatchie(sp)
