Now check this posting out (red bold by me, not the poster):
GreekBarber69 Posts: 8 Date: Nov 20 12:29 AM, 2008 I am very pleased in the support for Chris. I talk to him on a weekly basis and I can assure each and every one of the many Scranton tax payers that Chris is willing to go to bat for all of us. He is more than the right man for the job, he just may be the messiah this city's been waiting for. Honest, straight shooting, family valued, extreme intelligence etc. We are behind you Mr. Phillips do the right thing and run baby run.
Now I'm not picking on 'GreekBarber69' per se, but the repeated use of the word "messiah" in a few DD postings is interesting. Why? Because it says something about the persons using the word.
First, what does "messiah" mean? From ancient Greek and Hebrew the definition is basically "to annoint" or "the annointed one". I think that definition holds true for DD: they are looking for someone to be annointed as the new "leader' of Scranton. Who are they looking to do the annointing? Their flawless leader, Joe Pilchesky. The "who" will be annointed isn't nearly as important, I think, as who is doing the annointing. Pilchesky could make the case for Ray Lyman as Mayor and you can be guaranteed that a group of DD posters would enthusiastically agree.
Second, I think the context under which they are looking for a new Mayor is horribly messed-up. What isn't needed in Scranton is someone who is qualified to be Mayor by virtue of some annointing by a washed-up bully and his group of toadies; what Scranton needs is someone with broad leadership experience, a desire to serve, and most importantly, an incredibly thick skin. Think about how they describe their candidates: do they describe real qualifications, or do they couch their descriptions with terms like "for the people" and "the right man"? When last I checked, being "for the people" is highly subjective...and I didn't elect Fay Franus to speak for me as being one of the "people" she refers to constantly during her rants. Fay Franus and other DD posters are no more qualified to speak for "the people" than I am; the difference is that I'm not ignorant and arrogant enough to think that I can or should speak "for the people".
What both of the above roll up to, in my opinion, is the fact that in Scranton you have this small, bitter core of self-interested folks who simply want to be led by monolithic slogan (and that slogan can be either "for the people", "the right man" or "Doherty sucks"...the specifics don't matter). They really aren't intested in are qualifications...they just want someone to tell them what they want to hear, which is why many (but not all) of them come to DD in the first place. Personally, I'll consider voting for anyone; whether I actually do vote for him/her depends on their background/qualifications and where they stand on the issues. I don't need Joe Pilchesky to annoint anyone for me.

Ag Fay loves that "For the People" ... if you remember a few years back there were three people who ran for School Director ... back when they were first building Scranton High School ... they began the campaign before the ground breaking ceremony ... those people, Peg Paris, Bob Marino and James Minicozzi ran as a team "The Peoples Team" they were follwed around by Fay Franus ... everywhere they went Fay was there ... The promise that they made was to STOP Scraton High School from being built ... now during the campaign the ground breaking Ceremony took place these same people came and when the reverand was going to bless the ground these same People turned their backs in a defiante manner just as the Reverand began ... Fay joined them of course ... They had on orange shirts with "The Peoples Team" Logo in big bold lettering ... now how were they going to stop that school from being built????
Well Fay and her little candidates went around telling everyone that no matter what ... that school would not be built ... that they would stop it because they were "The Peoples Team" and they would do what the people wanted ... they won ... and well ... that school was built anyway ... so what does that tell Fay ... it should tell her a lot ... because she worshiped the ground they walked on ... and still ... they could not keep the promises that they made to her ... even though before they were elected the construction began ... she still needed to believe that they were going to stop it as they had promised ... But that didn't happen ... because they couldn't or wouldn't fullfill that promise ... and so I wonder why she thinks that things will be different with any other candidate ...
Don't look for a Messiah ... look for a leader ... we once had a messiah ... and he died on a cross for the good of mankind ... I don't think they are going to find a candidate for Mayor or any other office willing to do that for them.

These people, including Fay, are nothing but weak-minded, weak-willed followers. I find it revolting that they would even use a term like "messiah". Their very use of the word pollutes its meaning.

And they can consider that instructive under these dire circumstances.
The mayor has pushed them downfield repeatedly. They've not gained one single yard back because they don't have a good understanding of how justice is applicable to equity in the real world.
Now, if the mayor left the game and found every wire under the hood cut, his tires flat and holes drilled into his gas tank, he might, just might, understand there's another game to be played off the field.
When that happens to his precious campaign contributors, he'll understand the "other" game perfectly. Trust me. Play soft, you get pushed around. Play nice, you get pushed around. Play by the law, you get pushed around. Play by my rules and the pushing stops. Period. It's about the justice. It's that simple.
Wow ... Sounds like Joey is planning on commiting a few crimes ... hmmmm ... interesting!

well he forgot ... but I'm sure once he thinks about it that he will add the magic words by the end of the day.
