Taylor they never mentioned the party that was held for the Mayor at Tripps Park Community Center in Ocotber either ... I don't know if you attended that one ... but they had quite the turn out at that one also ... many new faces along with alot of the old ones.

Yes i did attend, and so far every party that has been held for the Mayor, probally about 8 or 10 of them all had great crowds.. The next losing candidate better check this and the Mayor's financial reports before they commit to a race that just might embarass them.

Does anyone here know about this 38% popularity poll about the mayor that is being referenced recently over at DD? I do not remember seeing it or hearing about it from anywhere but Joe. Does anyone know if it's real or should it be put in the X Files next to Bigfoot, Lake Scranton Monster, and Sam Patilla owning the city? (The homosexual reference at the end was underlined by Joe not me)
Doherty is kissing ass at a record-setting pace. His 38% approval rating speaks to his plaight. The one-man spending spectacle thought he could buy his way into political perpituity. Well, there's some truth to that. However, an element of that formula, if it's to be successful, is to spend wisely (include public services), and not to get caught in more lies than a camel has flees.
Doherty is currently sampling the support waters publicly with little Bring-a-drunk gatherings at various watering holes. Behind the scenes, the money people don't see a dividend-friendly future ina man who goes through municipal check books like Shimkus goes throughper diems, and now has horrific numbers that will be used to take him to the canvass.Perhaps even in the primary.
You're watching Chris Doherty beg like he's never had to beg before, and it looks goddamned good on him, but having the primary shoved uphis ass will even look better. And that's exactly where it's going. Way up his ass.
It is a shame that the canidate with the most money can buy an election. as we just seen in the presidental election. This is what stops good people from runing for office the person with the most money is not always the best person for the job. I wonder if the Mayor runs un opposed unless he has future political plans down the road if he will give all the money back to the people that donated.
A politician returning money to the people that donated it? Well unless the donator is later discovered to be a child-molesting member of the KKK, I'm thinking that never happens. But hey, that's the price you pay when you support a candidate...as the late, great Dr Hunter S. Thompson once observed, "you buy the ticket, you ride the ride".
Locally, I've voted for Chris Doherty twice in general elections, and if Janet Evans is the best the "opposition" can do, it will be three times by this time next year. That said, I've never donated a dime to him...but then again I've never given a dime to any politician for that matter.
As for the implication that Obama bought this election, I look at it this way: He was simply better at raising money than any other candidate in presidential election history. If there is any sliver lining, it's in the fact that he had more more smaller donors than, say, GW Bush did with his "Pioneers" program (which consistent of mostly large, monied donors).
Money is the grease that keeps political machines running...ALL political machines.

Your absolutely right with your post Ag ... The money would not be returned ... the people who give the money would not be looking to have it returned ... as you quoted "You by the ticket you ride the ride" ... and when you think about it they got what they paid for ... the Tripps Park party ... had entertainment ... great food ... actually unbelievable food ... and beer wine and soda ... they got what they paid for ... that's what the printed ticket promised and thats what was given.
I like Puzzler would like to know where Joe got these numbers from ... this 38% approval rating ... I have not seen those numbers anywhere other than at DD ... so I would like to see that opinion poll also.
And to Doomers ... I do think when running for office that it is hugely important to be able to raise money ... just a small local campaign cost a fortune to run ... I couldn't imagine what it would cost to run a campaign that would take you throughout the entire country ... so being able to raise the money to do that is of great importance.
I also have to say this ... I did not donate to the presidential campaign ... unless you count that little box you check on your income tax form ... Now what you didn't mention was this ... Obama raised a ton of money ... however he took none of the funds from the government to run his campaign.
I personally think he was a good choice ... and for the first time in a long time I have some hope that things may get better ... but I understand that this is something that will not happen overnight ... it is going to take time.

It's just too bad such an obscene amount of money was spent on advertisement. I am sure most Americans had their minds made up long before election day and did not need to be inundated with 24/7 television advertisments and those godforsaken robocalls. I know, I know .. that's what they do, but Jesus H, it's sickening the amount of money that was 'wasted' when it could have been put to good use elsewhere. Let him/them use those monies to help the POOR of the country - the people who can't afford a television or a telephone ...
yeah, yeah, yeah ... I'm ranting again .. whatta ya gonna do ...
One of the reasons the president-elect raised so much money was the fact that "poor" people donated small amounts in record numbers. Those $10 and $20 contributions added up. I believe campaign finance reform should be a matter of disclosure rather than amount.
I still say the mayor takes a pass in 2009, especially after diverting $3 million to Al Boscov.
The diversion to Boscov's will not be as much of an issue as many think, mainly due to the fact that everyone else in government is adding to the pot as well. It will be like breaking wind at a sewage treatment plan...one little stink in the midst of several much larger stinks.

Listen you!!! I will be wanting my Donkin Donuts coffee so if necessary I will sign the devil up myself to run.........<muttering> you are not getting out of buying my coffee :))
A good turnout at a party for the mayor? All that says is the obvious....that people in Scranton will turn out if there is booze. I wouldn't read anything more into it.
