Apparently DD poster 'Pragmat' takes the concept of turning lemons into lemonade to a new level in this thread.
Let's look at the recent election:
1. Doherty is a life-long Democrat...the Democrats won.
2. Ed Rendell received a lot of credit for helping Obama in PA...Doherty & Rendell are close. Rendell is being talked about as a potential Obama Cabinet appointee (although given the situation with the Lt. Governor Baker-Knoll, I'd be shocked if he took such a job).
3. Hillary Clinton will emerge as a powerful force in the Senate...Doherty has been a vocal supporter of Clinton.
4. Kanjorski won, with a very big assist from Lacakawana County (Luzerne County went to Barletta)...I'm thinking that Kanjorski now gets the message that his district doesn't end in Avoca anymore. Political aspirations aside, this keeps the government cash coming to Scranton, and we know how much Doherty loves government cash.
5. Barletta lost...and if you read the pre-election of the Union News, you'd see that he went to great lenghts to court the union vote, including touting his relationship with Hazelton municipal unions. Check out the photo showing Barletta with union leaders, including Nancy Krake. It seems to me that the unions bet on the wrong horse this time around.
6. Lackawanna County came out big for Obama...something along the lines of 80%+ of former Hillary Clinton supporters ended up voting for Obama. That's a coup for all loyal Democrats, and is yet another example of how the Republicans effectively don't exist as a party in Lackawanna County. As a prominent local Democrat, Doherty is enhanced.

So then you disagree that it was an "extremely bad night" for Doherty? By the way, I do agree with your overall assessment...my point was that 'Pragmat' is full of crap.

It was not an "extremely bad night" for the mayor. Politically, he made both poor decisions and good decisions during the year. How Kevin Murphy reacts will determine the extent of the damage from the Shimkus race. I never believed Frank would implode as badly as he did.
The whole Frank Andrews Shimkus thing is an interesting case study in what's wrong with politics in Harrisburg...arrogance and a sense of entitlement there spread like a herpes outbreak in Bangkok. You think it would be a safe bet to send a preacher down there as a reformer, but not in Pennsylvania. In the end though, it wasn't really Pilchesky or Murphy that brought him down...it was Frank Andrews Shimkus that brought Frank Andrews Shimkus down. To be blunt, he was sloppy and arrogant...so much so that a guy with a (something like) 5 for 25 record managed to win against him in court. That doesn't say much for Frank.
Definite sign that the stars are aligned against you: you get beaten in court by Joe Pilchesky.
