It is about time the Police get a fair contract. It takes special people to work 6 years with out a contract. The mayor has spent to much money on raises for his cabinet. The city's budget is bigger than the lackawanna county budget. The only way this mayor will stop spending money is to vote him out. People deserve what they get when they keep sending the same people back Mayor Doherty belives in spreading the wealth but not for the good workers of our city.

Who is even running for Mayor other than Chris Doherty ... and if my choice is Chris Doherty or Janet Evans ... I am going Chris Doherty.

Although I agree with you that the City Unions need contracts ... they deserve a fair contract ... it's way overdue ... but I am not going to vote for someone just to oust Chris Doherty from office ... but that's just my opinion.

I will never vote Janet Evans for anything ... again that is just my opinion. She has not put forth one intelligent, well thought out peice of legislation ... she panders to the doomers and to the DD gang ... she will tell me what she thinks I want to hear and then totally contradict herself when the next person wants to hear a different story ... I have heard her do this ... now don't get me wrong I have been in Janets company on more than on occassion and well I have to say that she has been perfectly pleasant to me ... but ... I remember bringing an issue to her when she first won her council seat ... and I guess she just didn't think it was important enough to even mention ... but hell no matter what the nuts ask of her ... she jumps into action ... she just does not treat people equally ... she is not for all of the people as she claims to be ... but that's just my opinion ...

At the present time I am going to cast my vote for Chris Doherty in 2009 ... and from the cast of characters that I have heard mentioned for the office of Mayor ... well I can't see me changing my mind at this point in time.

Chris Doherty has failed on two fronts:

1. He's failed to negotiate in good faith with city employees, instead opting for an adversarial relationship.
2. He's failed to reduce the size/cost of city government to better fit Scranton's tax base.

The above noted (& as Lus said so well), I'd still vote for him over Janet Evans. Her actions in the past, such as using a School Director seat to get herself a full-time teaching position and pandering to the lowest common denominator of behavior in Council chambers, point her out to be nothing more than a self-serving, old-school politician.

A $10 Starbucks card says Chris Doherty does not run in next year's mayoral primary. Any takers?

You're on Cashuric...and no weasely lawyer tricks to get out of this when you lose.

Interestingly enough, if he doesn't run then who does? Janet Evans is the only person who could get me to vote for Gary DiBileo.

Oh he is running ... if he's not running then what is he going to use the campaign funds for ... the SSA recently held a very succesful fundraiser for Chris Doherty at Tripps Park Community Center on a Sundayafternoon (October 5th)... there must have been 300 people there ... and then later in the week (Wednesday of the same week) they had a rally for him at a bar on Main Ave for the west side contingency ... all to kick up his campaign for Mayor ... so I think Glenn you are wrong on this ... he is most certainly running for Mayor in 2009.

Dunkin Donuts it is, then. My gut is telling me that he limits himself to two terms, highlights his accomplishments, and then goes full-bore into a 2010 campaign either for Congress or Lieutenant Governor.

Why take a chance on getting side-swiped both by a severe recession and an electorate suffering from job losses, high heating costs, and a 40% decline on their 401(k)s?

If Rick Santorum had retired from the Senate in 2006 to focus on a 2008 presidential campaign, he may very well have been the nominee.

That would have been a dream come true for Obama. Think about it...if Bob Casey (an uninspiring speaker & average campaigner) could beat Santorum by double digits in a Pennsylvania Senate race, then Obama would crush him in a Presidential election.

I'm wondering why anyone would work in a place that's only provided two raises in 18 years. When last I checked none of us are chained to our jobs.

I hear ya Ag ... if I were not getting cost of living raises over the years ... Hell I would not be staying in my job ... that's for sure!

18 years with only 2 raises ... I know that I would not have stayed. I'm guessing that the benefit package must be great ... because I could think of no other reason someone would stay in a job like that.

Good point Lus. If, for example, an emplopyer offered free heathcare, that alone would probably be equal to the value of an annual cost-of-living increase.

I will say this though: people in this area are sometimes affraid of change, which translates into staying in a a bad job for far too long. Despite what you may hear from the likes of Pilchesky and his many alter-egos, there are good jobs out there, but you have to work at getting them.

I know what you mean about the benefit package eating up the raise ... I have been going through that for years now ... getting a raise only to have that raise eaten up and then some by the high cost of my benefit package ... this year will be a welcome relief ... we will for the first time in years actually see more money coming home in our paychecks ... I can't wait. I actually got a raise last year and brought home less money each payday.

LIke I have stated in the past, if the cops don't break away from the firemen, they will never get a decent contract. Jennings is using the cops a leverage, can't they see it didn't work when he tried to use the DPW and the Clerical the same way,, They both have contracts that will expire before the cops and firemen ever get one...

i see my above statement is correct, the new deal with the cops is dead, I heard jennings wanted the same deal for the firemen, but Mayor Doherty, said noway, just like he should.. When will these cops learn,, get your own deal and move on.. keep trying to protect the fiemen and they will lose.. Just ask the oldtimers how the firmen would lay behind in negotications then submit their ME-TOO clase and get the same deal without have to deal with negociations,, this went on for yrs and finally when it was stopped it was discovered the firmen always had a better deal, espically with retirement...

Cops and Firemen don't mesh, the Cops need to get away and negociate for themselves. Jennings is using the Cops as hostiges against the City for the Fireman.

Personally speaking they should dump Jennings. That isnot a person who they should ever think has their best interest at heart.
