When are the citizens of Scranton going to finally wake up and realize that if you do not live on North Washington Avenue or it's surrounding streets [Such as Sunset?] you will not have well manicured streets (no potholes, leaves, litter, etc)? [Funny, but I didn't hear of any paving on North Washington Avenue prior to the fundraiser, did anyone else?]
I for one thought it was a complete insult to the voters of Scranton that Doherty hosted such an event at his house [Note the words "at his house"...since when do ANY OF US have a say as to what someone else chooses to do in their own house?] for Clinton and hasn't put that much effort into seeing that "us" the taxpayers do not blow out a tire trying to dodge all of the potholes. [So the connection between potholes...which I agree are all over the place AND which I agree have ALWAYS been a problem in Scranton...and the Clinton fundraiser is what??? Maybe Bill Clinton caused some extra expansion and contraction of water in the asphalt of our roads, leading to more potholes?]
Chris Doherty is a phony, always was, always will be. [Chris Doherty is a POLITICIAN...a certain degree of "phony" goes with the territory. Some of us think Ms Evans is even worse in the phony department, for reasons already explained ad nauseum on this board.]
Anyway, what's the connection between potholes and the PRIVATE FUNDRAISER at Chris Doherty's house?
Answer: There is no connection.
So, using DD logic, any two events/conditions can be connected, right?
...My cat ran outside and an airplace crashed in Indonesia ...The Iron Man movie is coming out in May and my rhododendron is almost in bloom ...Gas is at $3.49 a gallon and Granma wrote a sentence that had both a subject and a verb in it.
And who said Philosophy was a boring subject?

The way the DD goons act ... you would think that Potholes are a problem specific to Scranton ... but you can drive through most towns and you will find the same moster size potholes that we have here in Scranton.
This is something that occurs every winter ... freezing water gets down in small cracks enlarging them ... salt is put down to melt the ice and it errodes away the road surface ... it makes the existing crack larger eventually turning them into huge holes ... it happens every year. Now one way to help control this problem would be to come up with an alternative to salt ... yet the freezing water will still get in there and expand these cracks ... so no matter what we are going to have this problem.
I'm have seen paving projects going on ... so they are working on this problem ...
Another problem is this ... when I was a kid they would close down a newly paved road not allowing traffic on the newly paved surface for at least 24 hours ... if I remember right it was 48 hours ... which gave the surface time to cure ... harden ... whatever ... and the pavement would not be stressed and would last much longer ... but these days you can't do that ... why ... because the same people that bitch about the potholes now bitch about not being able to drive on the roads ... so we are never going to solve the pothole problem because we are living in a city of impatient people ... We now drive on these roads 5 minutes after the pavement is completed!

Everyone knows that the freezing and thawing of water on/in our asphalt roads is due to the in-breeding and property loving ways of the various Irish Catholic Network nodes.

Gramma is opposed to street closings. Remember the block party somewhere in west side last year? I think one of Chris Doherty's cronies was to blame, and not to mention they had children directing traffic!
Street closings would require some people to drive an extra block or two, wasting precious gasoline that has become so expensive, thanks to the ICN.
The solution to the pothole problem is to seal the cracks in the roads with tar every fall as a part of regular maintenance. This is something I have never seen done in Scranton. Seems to me tar would be much cheaper than asphault. I recently read in the Times that Dunmore purchased a tar machine for this purpose.
Actually I'd love to see what countries with far more extreme weather...such as Canada, Sweden, Norway, etc.,...do for road maintenance. There are probably lessons to be learned.
Regardless, your point Lord C makes a ton of sense. As a result, don't look for anyone at DD to bring it up any time soon. Why apply logic when you can simply blame the Irish?

There was a time when they did seal them with tar ... but again that was a long time ago ... hey maybe we could learn something from Dunmore and purchase a machine of our own ... or maybe its as finding out if we still have the old one somewhere and seeing if it can be fired up again ...
sealing cracks along with finding a salt alternative that would not be harmful to the environment wouldn't hurt either.

When temperatures drop in the winter, the water that has collected in the soil freezes and expands, causing the ground to expand and push the pavement up.
As the temperatures rise during the spring months, the ground thaws out and returns to normal level but the pavement that was pushed up often remains raised. This creates a gap between the pavement and the ground below it.
When vehicles drive over this gap, the road surface cracks and falls into the hollow space leading to the birth of another pothole.
