The goons have a thread [here] about the recently announced county layoffs, with all of the posters (so far) bemoaning the fact that "chiefs" are safe, but "indians" are not. What strikes me about the thread is this: these people really, truly don't think about what they write before they hit the Submitt Post button, do they? A few points to ponder:
...the County Commissioners CAN NOT layoff the Recorder of Deeds, despite how much DD poster 'Concerned Citizen' cries. That position, along with other elected positions, is integrated into the county Home Rule Charter.
...if the county did not reduce expenses, how many of these same turd blossoms would be complaining at the top of their lungs about taxes being raised to meet a budget shortfall?
...why should county government be any different than the private sector when it comes to reacting to changes in the financial environment? Layoffs are common in the private sector, where there are no lifetime employment guarantees...I suspect, however, that at least a good portion of DDs posters are public sector employees who believe that it is their God-given right to employment at the public troth forever. Typical entitlement mentality.
...I got my private-sector job because I was the most qualified for it and because I worked my a$$ off. Honestly, how many county employees got their jobs because they knew or were related to someone? Now that's not to say that because of these kinds of factors county employees should be MORE susceptible to a layoffs than me, but you know what...they shouldn't be LESS susceptible either. If employment at will, based on economic conditions is good enough for me, then it should be good enough for them as well.
...I know that layoffs aren't easy; in fact, unlike what I suspect is true of the Goons, I've had to lay people off myself at work. Telling someone that they no longer have a job is the hardest thing that a manager can ever do; that said, it's reality and you do it for the greater good of the organization. Sometimes it's unfair, most of the time it's very difficult, but it is reality.
While I am very sympathetic to those county workers impacted by these layoffs, part of me is glad that the County Commissioners are taking a realistic look at finances and taking realistic measures to deal with the problems they face. For far too long, county leaders have used smoke and mirror tricks to hide the true condition of the financial picture. It's time to start running government more efficiently, and that means making these kinds of difficult choices.
