This has nothing to do with Pilchesky and his pin-headed Goon Squad, but I do think it's an interesting topic, so I'm going to post it.

First, let me say that I've never been fond of teachers being in a union. This is because, in my opinion, professional educators shouldn't all be treated the same; instead, they should be rewarded according to their performance. However, I'm enough of a realist to get it that school boards aren't always run efficiently, effectively or with the utmost respect for district employees in mind...and as a result, a teachers union can protect its members from political favoritism or vendettas from school board members. It's a messy solution to a messy problem.

All the above said, I read today where the Diocese of Scranton has decided NOT to recoginze the union that petitioned to bargain on behalf of Diocese lay teachers. This was mentioned in today's edition of The Catholic Lite and in an article on the lay teacher union website...article here. Note that, as I understand it, National Labor Relations Acts don't apply to religious organizations, so I don't think the union has much in the way of recourse.

The truly interesting part is that Roman Catholic Church as traditionally supported the rights of workers to unionize, so not recognizing the lay teacher union seems to run against the teaching of the church itself. In other words, it appears that the Church is in essence saying "do as I say, not as I do".

Any thoughts on this?

The catholic church has paid too much money out in sexual lawsuits. This bishop is a tirant and the worse one ever all I can say to the teachers is you have a right to strike you have been in this union for 30 years. Be strong and Strike Strike Strike.
