I had to read this twice just to make sure that my eyes were not deceiving me, but DD poster John Galt actually makes a few very good point in this posting.
RE: YO ROGAN PAY ATTENTION.... Regarding the two party system in Lackawanna County- It simply doesn't exist. Everyone is a democrat. True republicans are faced with not having a candidate or voting for the least-repusive democrat. The republican party is a joke told by democrats to lighten the mood. Our party leaders know this and perpetuate the rumor that the party exists to have fodder for conversation around the watercooler.
Then again, the national republican party cowtows to the far right so much that voters, disgusted with their party selling out to the religious zelots have only the choice of voting democratic.
Our politicians are so interested in getting the job that they dump their values to get the job and keep the job. If only candidates who were more interested in doing the job within their ethical and moral beliefs than trading their stance for votes would come forward... Politicians live by compromise but that doesn't mean they have to compromise their values and ethics to solve our problems. Where are the leaders?
Hey, it's my fantasy.
I agree with the premise of the post for the most part, but in this area it's tougher than you think to actually distinguish between the parties. A few examples come to mind...
...the most powerful elected local Democrat, Chris Doherty, is very conservative from a socail issue perspective. He's also very pro-business. ...the most powerful elected Republicans, Munchak and Cordaro (ok, actually just Cordaro) spend money like Ted Kennedy on a Friday night Boston bender.
I think another consideration is the fact that national Republicans can distinguish themselves as 'small government' types, which is actually tougher to do on a local scale. For example, national Republicans can argue about the wisdom of having a federal Department of Education, but local Republicans aren't about to argue the wisdom of having a Police, Fire or Refuse departments. There just isn't as much room to stake out broad differences in policy at a local level.
In terms of moral and ethical beliefs, those are party-neutral. For every former Klansman Democrat Robert Byrd, you have a potential-pervert Republican Larry Craig. What's more concepts like morals and ethics are subjective: for example, I think it's unethical for a standing school director to be appointed to a teaching position, as it stinks of self-dealing. In Scranton that was clearly acceptable by many, as evidenced by the presence of Janet Evans in a Scranton High School classroom.
Any hoots, I routinely beat on DD posters for the incredibly stupid things they write, so I did want to point out John Galt's posting as something positive in the sewer that is Pilchesky-land.
