Ok so I was going through the Times online this morning and well I found this letter to the Editor:

Ignoring the experts

Editor: Why do we, as taxpayers, have a Department of Health if we are not going to accept its expert opinion? Besides that, how can the board vote for something so costly off-the-cuff?

If everyone is so concerned, do what you do for incoming kindergarteners and first-graders require everyone to get tested. Each concerned parent paying $15-$20 is a much better solution than the Scranton School District spending $40,000 on TB tests the Department of Health says are a waste of money.

DIANA STATSMAN

SCRANTON

I find that this person can be unconcerned because she is not in the environment every day ... she does not have a child in the environment every day ... so it's easy when you are on the outside looking in to be against the testing of all people in the building.

I say how do we put a price tag on the public health? And Diana would you feel this way if you were going to school or working at Scranton High?

I myself have already been tested ... I paid for it myself ... but I think that it is so important for all to be tested ... at the very least they will have greater peace of mind ... they will be able to relax ... before being tested ... everytime I coughed I wondered ... Do I have TB? After being tested a simple cough was just that ... a simple cough.

Remember ... not all parents can afford the ten or fifteen dollars per child to be tested. Here is a question for you ... if you lived next door to a person infected with TB Disease or if you worked with a person infected with TB Disease ... would you not be worried? If you spent time with a person infected with TB Disease you would certainly want to be tested. Also keep in mind that we do not have the right to know who these infected people are ... so we do not know if we spent time with them or not ... so we are worried and I must commend the Scranton School District for agreeing to test everyone in the building ... it will bring a sense of relief to the students, parents of our students and the employees working in the building.

I am sorry Diana but you cannot put a price on that .... $40,000 is a small price to pay.
