I realize there are a lot of streets to be plowed, and I think they could do a better job, especially on side streets. BUT, I can remember a time, mainly while Jimmy Connors was mayor, that city streets would not see one single plow during snowstorms, except for state roads plowed by Penn Dot. I didn't live in Scranton at the time, but I can vividly recall driving on streets in say, Throop or Dickson City, that would be completely clear, and then driving across the city line to find snow covered streets with the only part of the pavement showing being tire tracks. I find it funny that the DD crew is over there at the cuckoo's nest saying how bad the snow plowing is under Doherty and saying how much better it was under Connors. What a joke.
I'm no big fan of Doherty, but the DPW services have been much better under him.
I posted these words last night -- just because they aren't plowing on YOUR street, doesn't mean they aren't plowing on ANY street.
No they're not SUPERMEN and they cannot be everywhere at once. I talked to a friend in Green Ridge - she lives on a side street and it hasn't been plowed yet. They call this situation a state of emergency for a REASON. If they tell you to stay off the streets unless you have an emergency, then STAY THE HELL HOME. When interstate highways look like parking lots, that tells you something - roads are BAD - STAY THE HELL HOME. It's ALL that is on the tv, and all they are saying is how horrible the traffic is snarled and there are white-out conditions and the snow is just getting deeper - what the hell does that tell you?? STAY THE HELL HOME.
And quitcherbitchin for cripe's sake - you had fair warning, you knew it was coming - you (let's piss Paul off) 'should of' or 'could of' bought your smokes and suds before the first flake hit the ground.

Sam for the record ... we have had a poster that was a DD'er who thought that it was ok to stalk the workers of the DPW ... we set him straight ... and he took his toys and left our sandbox ... now don't get me wrong ... I don't care if he posts here or not ... but our friend Tripp Park Proud does not like that we do not condone that type of behavior here ... that is where the hate for the DPW came from here ... it's not us ... we have not turned into DD ...
It's nice to see you posting again ... your absence was noticed ... welcome back!
Now I just have our friend Dil to worry about ...

As I've written before, the DPW workers do a great job with the very unglamorous tasks...whether it's picking up maggot infested garbage on a 90 degree summer day or plowing snow during a blizzard on a 15 degree winter day. You will hear the DD crew bitch and moan about it, but then again they are bitching and moaning from a computer keyboard in a warm house. Talk is cheap. Besides, if it were 'Mayor Evans' at the helm, I am sure they would instead be singing the praises of the DPW.

Anyway, keep up the great work, and thanks for bringing us out of the dark ages.

Salutations, Ms. Evans! Please allow me to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly concur with our esteemed Mr. Pilchesky. This city has indeed experienced a sort of renaissance since you ascended to office of Mayor. You are exactly the breath of fresh air our little city needed. Huzzah, my good woman! I have editied out his cell phone number because I did not want to be put up on our biggest hypocrite list ...
And Granma ... your just upset because you never got to confront Mr. Parker on the Hollow Ave. Tree removal ... get over it ...
Here is the thing ... if you people are out stalking the DPW workers, Foreman, and the Director then you are contributing to the problem ... it is not just a Scranton problem ... the roads are a disaster everywhere .... WATCH THE NEWS ... All Cities, Townships, and boroughs seem to be having the same problem across the state. And why may you ask ... because there are vehicles stuck on the road everywhere! Now ... if they plow these road and they damage these vehicles then you will all bitch because they are causing damage to peoples personal property your new thread would read "DPW SHOULD BE MORE CAREFUL" ... What if we are simply thankful that nobody got killed ... the DPW workers are doing the very best they can ... and they can't work 24/7 straight through ... they are only HUMAN!
I suppose that we will have to listen to you all bitch at the next council meeting because your garbage didn't get picked up this week ... because none of you DD'ers will be happy if you don't have something to bitch about. Les Spindler will be the first at the Podium to bitch about that ... of that I'm sure!
I am pro Doherty and my street has not been touched yet ... so I guess your all wrong about the Pro Doherty people getting their streets cleaned first! Oh and I guess I could use that phone number and call George Parker ... but you know what ... I will be patient and hopefully they will get here soon!

It's a plus for them to do a good job at something and after all, it's a simple as calling in the cronies with their equipment to go through the movements. The neighborhoods are still untouched in so many areas. We're three days into it and we have seen a plow in this part of Scranton, the Weston Field area. Nothing. The roads are deeply rutted and the center part is hard as a rock, unplowable. It's great to clean up the downtown,
BUT NO ONE LIVES DOWN TOWN. I lost two days work because I can't even get out of my driveway. What if I had an emergency? Parker is a joke of a man and DPW chief.
OK I guess your name isn't a description of you personally ... I beg to differ with you ... but people do live downtown ... unless you consider the people that live in the forum towers and the high rises for the elderly (7 different apartment buildings for the elderly alone)... and what about the Jermyn Hotel ... and the many other apartment buildings in the downtown ... are you saying that these are not people ... what then do you consider them? And not all of them are elderly ... and yes they have to go to work also ...
Hey why don't you do what I did ... when I couldn't get my car out the snow pile I had to abandon in in ... I fu**ing walked to work ... if you wanted to get there you would have gotten there you didn't have to lose 2 days of pay ... or was it that your place of work closed for those 2 days? ... I did it I got to work. And yesterday Feb 16, ... I was off so I dug my car out of the snow pile it was buried on (on a side street) ... and then I came home and dug out a part of the street (so I could get the car home)... and my driveway (so I could park the car once I got it home) ... There is a tool you need to use to accomplish this ... it's a shovel learn how to use it ...maybe we could request a class on how to use a snow shovel for you ... let me know I would be happy to write a letter requesting that ... think about it

Hey BigDaddy ... I know for a fact that the DPW was out and on the road Tuesday at 6:00 PM ... check the overtime ... this storm was insane and there was no way to keep up with it once the whiteout conditions happened along with 3 or more inches of sleet ... check things out before you say they were not out there because they were!
Posts: 56 Date: Sun Feb 18 10:09 PM, 2007 Views: 338 Quote | ReplyRE: This is crazy!!!! If the DPW had started running rounds with the plows in the middle of the night on Tuesday they would have been able to keep up with the snow and we would not have to pay the outside guys to do the work that we expect for our additional 25% from our cities dept's.
"This was a freak storm" was the quote from the fishwrap ,ya right like the news stations were not telling us about this storm on Sunday, they knew this was coming and dropped the ball big time, the only surprise was that we expected something from Parker and the mayor. The 3 stooges(Parker, Doherty, Hayes) let the entire city drown under the snow from this storm just like they let the residents of Lower Greenridge drown under the waters of the river. Maybe now some of the people out there will undertsand what and why Mr. Hubbard has been so vocal about the floods and the total lack of response from the city. This time it was the streets but last year it was peoples homes.

My hatred isn't for the plow drivers, the guys doing the thankless grunt work and getting sht upon, rathar unfairly, by some of our more esteemed citizens. My hatred is reserved for George Parker, after claiming that all the city streets in Scranton are "passable". I live on a block that hasn't seen a snowplow in at least two years that says differently.
"Mission Accomplished" was a joke when President Bush said it. It's offensive when Parker says it. His definition of "passable" is a lot different than anyone elses, I promise you.
While he's busy patting himself on the back, I'll be busy breaking mine to make my own street passable.
George, consider my garbage collection bill paid in full.
Paul ... I thank you for your response ... we need to not put the blame on the guys ... we need to blame Parker ... he's the one who comes up with the plan ... I know what you mean about living on a street that never sees a plow ... I live on one of those streets myself ... happens to be a dead end and well I guess Parker figures there is no point because the street leads to nowhere ... so the shoveling I understand and have been doing for the past 6 years since I have lived on this street. But from what the neighbors tell me ... not one director thought it was important to clean this street ever so ... as many times as I call ... nobody ever comes to clean the street ... is that right ... no ... but also it's not the fault of the guys ... they don't make the plan ... I know one guy who was out for 42 hours straight ... he tired his best ... and it makes me insane to read that someone saw them in a donut shop drinking coffee ... well you know what they deserve a break don't ya think?
But anyway I thank you for putting the blame where the blame deserves to be ... not on the guys driving ... but on the management.

Hopefully when the dust (or is that snow?) settles, there will be some changes, both locally and state-wide. I know that you can't make everyone happy with stuff like this...plows can't be everywhere at once...but there needs to be a better plan to get the roads treated.

There are many things that need to be improved upon, but there are also things that we can do as well. I agree that George Parker could have had a better contingency plan. We definitely should have been more prepared - after all, this is Northeastern Pennsylvania -- we are going to get snow eventually. Anyway...
Instead of bitching over our snow shovels with the neighbors, and harping about it on the inernet, there are more beneficial things WE can do (as individuals, and as a neighborhood) to make the situation better for ourselves. Whether the city has a directive to do it or not, the neighbors can get together and park all its cars on one side of the street. Hell, park on the sidewalks if you have to - we do - and it's less you'll have to shovel later. If a considerable amount of snow is predicted and there is the good possibility there will be no school or a delay and you'll have to dig out anyway ... what's the big deal? Besides, the plows will be able to do a better job and you'll have less to bitch about over the snow shovels. It doesn't take much. Unless you would rather do the bitching -- every neighborhood has one, don't they??
Those guys across the hall make it sound like the plow operators are swooping through the city, capes flying, twirling their handlebar mustaches and laughing as they cover an old lady's Chrysler with a ton of dirty slush.
We have done this for years - we park our cars on our sidewalk in front of our house. When the plow comes by, he can make a pass directly in front of our house, cleaning a place for us to put our cars. After we move the cars to the street, my sidewalk is mostly cleaned off and it saves me a ton of work. Since no one is out driving anyway, the next pass they make clears the street. You may be scratching your head, but it has worked for us for over fifteen years. And my plow guy doesn't HATE me. And my street is clean.
I am sure there are certain areas these guys HATE to plow because the neighbors don't make the slightest effort to make it process easier for all concerned. Taking a few preventative steps helps everyone concerned. In case you are of the mind that "I'm not helping those so-and-so's do their job", well just grow the hell UP and quitcherbi+chin.
I agree with Girl on this one ... I remember being a kid and there were rules for parking when snow was expected and it was posted on every telephone pole on the street ... a little metal sign claiming the street to be and emergency snow route and that should you choose to park on it during a snow storm or before the storm was cleaned up ... that you would be fined and also you car would be towed ... it worked back then and well we should think about snow routes again! Just a thought ... we need some thought put into the cleanup process ... perhaps a plan can be formulated ... I personally am someone who like to have a plan! Maybe Parker should let the guys do what the guys know how to do ... most have been doing this for years and years ... perhaps they may have some valuable input.

I think it all goes back to a problem inherent in all governments: virtually no incentive for change. In the private sector, if my employer (for example) makes a big mistake, we are punished by the market...with a lower stock price...and by our customers...who will go to our competition. In Scranton there is no stock price, and it's difficult/expensive to move (although I am sure many of us would contribute to a Joe Pilchesky Moving Fund). Hopefully last weeks events will provide enough of an incentive to change how snow removal is accomplished in Scranton.
NOTE: The above is my explanation as to why the city fails to improve the delivery of services to residents. However just for fun, I thought I'd take a stab at our good friend Anti's explanation of how the city could do better at things like snow removal. Here goes:
“Due to the machinations of the sub-nodules of the ICN and both a local and global scale, structural shrinkage is not possible. What must occur be factional rifts between various competing uni-matrices within the ICN, thereby providing an incentive for non-core ICNers to stop picking on poor white and non-white children and instead be concentrating on the snow removal.”
Hell, while I'm at it, here's a Granma version: "DOherty is an ignotant ignoracaurus! I was at coffee shop having my usual breakfast black coffee and a pack of newports and I heard George Packer said that not only were all streets plowed but that nazi gold was found under parrott avenue. The lying Doobee I know that there is no nazi gold burried under parrott avenue he should just plow the streets good like gary dibilieo would be plowing them if he were the mayor because he would be a great mayor. Gary is smart and knows how to do things like plow streets and appoint good police officers cause I know from listening the scanner while I am watching tv. gary is a good man just like janet evans and I know janet will get to the bottom of this once joe sues the city for all the bad things this snow removal caused cause joe is smart and knows how to do these things and he care about the city just like gary and janet care about the city and joe only sues the city cause he cares about the city just like gary and janet"

Sorry, while I find many of DD and Pilchesky's practices to be ridiculous - i.e.: stalking of public officials, frivolous lawsuits, etc....I think they are right on the money with this one. This is a tragedy that, while not 100%, could very well have been averted if this city's leadership could arrange its priorities and do a better job clearing snow. Chris Doherty did not create the poor snow removal problem in this city...this has been going on for years and snow removal was even worse under Connors. But the bottom line is that a child is dead, and chances are he could have been saved if not for morons like Parker with his "all roads are passable" crap.
They need to stop putting the downtown first, and clear the neighborhoods first. What's more important: whether or not people can park by downtown businesses or whether people can travel through their neighborhoods safely?
Ed Pisano was probably the best Director of Public works that this city had ... You are right Tripp ... I think that the men would have laid down and died for that man ... it's a shame he's not willing to go back to that position!
