paraphrased from one on one::: COUNTING MAYOR CONNORS AND ALL THE MAYORS BEFORE HIM ... ALL THE MAYORS COMBINED OVER THE YEARS DIDN'T DO THAT TO THIS CITY :::
All the mayors combined over the years couldn't even fathom this dollar amount, so the fact that so much money has been spent by this administration should certainly not be compared to any other mayor.
What was the dollar figure for the damage Ivan caused a few years ago as compared to the damage Agnes caused thirty years ago? Doubled? Tripled? And the Ivan damage wasn't even as devastating as Agnes. Hell, the South Side Flats were devastated by Hazel and how much did it cost at the time to make repairs ? How much would it cost NOW to make a clean up effort in that area? Maybe set up some levees and flood gates? Millions and millions, I think.
If Jimmy Conners moved the bandwagon to a different area three times a week so he could sing with the Poets, that was a big deal twenty years ago. Mayor Hanlon, Mayor Walsh - they couldn't spend this kind of money if they tried. Everyone bitches and moans about their cost of living raises - don't they realize that the cost of concrete and bricks and labor increases as well? The dollar figure being spent is a scary amount - but comparing it to the monies spent thirty years ago, just doesn't make sense.
(It's late and I'm bushed - I hope this made some sense.)
Girl ... you made a lot of sense ... thank you for pointing that out to our DD guests ... I think that they forget the difference in costs of today and the costs of yesteryear ... I can't remember which date the meeting was where a gentleman actually stood at the podium and compared the debt of a mayor from the late 1800's to the debt of Mayor Doherty today ... I thought it was rediculous then (and still do) look at the difference in prices just 5 years ago and today ... and just another little thought ... city taxes have not been raised in what approximately 16 years ... with a shrinking tax base ... yet the DD'ers want to retain all of the city services with no cuts ... and they want all of the roads in tip top shape ... and they want the city to foot the bill for channel 61 (or at least part of the bill) and they want the parks (all of them) maintained ... they want contracts settled ...and they want ... want ... want ... want ... but what they don't realize is ... this all costs money dear people ... not one thing you wants comes without a price tag ... I think we all want these things ... but most of us realize that the things we want in life are not free and they do have a price to pay ... so the taxes must go up ... you don't go bitchin at the county ... and you don't go bitchin at the School District ... so the City wants after at least 17 years of not getting anything in tax increases ... any you all bitch ... I don't like taxes either ... hell I don't think anyone wants to pay taxes ... but this is the thing ... I don't mind them as much as long as I am getting something in return for those taxes ... hell I could bitch about school taxes as I have no children .... and I have been paying them for years for everyone elses children ... but I don't complain because I would much rather have an educated child than no education for children ... So I pay ... I would much rather have nice parks for the citizens to enjoy ... than to have no place to go and enjoy nature ... I like having my garbage picked up and not having to worry weather or not I have a sticker on each and every bag ... I like the proffessional police and fire departments ... and yes I do believe the deserve a contract ... but all of this costs money ... so the taxes must go up ... and now Girl I have rambled ... but anyway I like what you had to say ... sorry guys.
