Who threatened the mayor a few years ago online?

I remember a couple of years ago, a story on the news about someone being arrested for making threats of physical harm against Chris Doherty on some online forum.  I believe it was before Joe Pilchesky started his site.  What ever happened in that case?  Was anyone ever convicted?  And was the person someone who is now a poster at DD?

I honestly have no idea. I have never heard about anything like that happening.  Anyone else know?

Here's the story.  Apparently it happened last year.

I vaguely remember this - and had completly forgotten about it until it was mentioned here.  Was someone actually arrsted?  I don't remember it getting that far.  And I certainly wouldn't doubt if it was one of the psychos from across the hall at DD.

I don't think anyone was ever arrested, but it would not surprise me if it's one of the nuts at DD. That's right up their alley.

That is very distressing. We have, for the most part, only poked fun at the nonsense on DD but some of the nonsense has left me very concerned, let me explain.

I have said before, that I believe most of the posters at DD are harmless, annoying, mean, and rude, but harmless. However, the key word is most. I have been concerned that the level of vitriol and hatred spewed by that website could, and I stress could, encourage someone who is a little “touched” to take it to the next level. It wouldn’t be the first time something like that has happened.

This group has encouraged people to “find dirt” on certain people, have suggested they search certain peoples garbage, that certain people are being “watched”. They use phrases like, “taking someone down” “getting them back” and “making them pay”.  These are very inflammatory phrases and could lead someone who has poor judgment in the wrong direction.

I have also been concerned about how the families, of the public officials being relentless abused, are feeling.  How long can they take this abuse, of someone they love, without becoming angry themselves?  Might it not be possible that an otherwise perfectly reasonable person could be pushed to do something stupid, as a result of this constant harassment? I think yes.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying that citizens do not have the right to criticize public officials, they most certainly do. In fact, I believe we have a moral obligation as a citizen, to point out governmental wrong doing when it exists. There is, however, a correct way and an incorrect way to criticize.  I submit the tact that DD has taken is the incorrect way.  The scorched earth, rabid wolf-pack mentality that they have demonstrated can only lead to a negative outcome, I am afraid

We live in a civilized society, and as such we are called upon to be civilized in our public discourse, if we have any expectations of a positive outcome.

Once again IHave has hit the nail on the head ... the headlines of newspapers ... the news coverage shows just how often reasonable people are pushed to their very limits.  These people are thinking that they are doing the right thing and when some tragedy does occur they will all sit back and say "I never thought Johnny would be the type of person to do something like that, ....... I am shocked."  That is one reason this place was created ... to try and let them know the damage they can cause ... not only pushing someone to the brink of madness ... but what about the person who is not particularly strong ... and they log on and see their divorce papers online for the world to see ... or the person who's husband/wife had an affair and they just want to move on and the only thing they hear about everywhere they go is the affair because this website has the entire town involved in personal business ... this could bring a desperate person to take desperate measures ... it's very scary all of the scenarios that could play out because one man wants revenge for not being able to put up a ramp ... Very scary indeed!
