i would love to see someone print what all of these fire and police awards are REALLY about. truth is, i had never believed that this is a job you do for the amount of money you receive. my brother, father and sister are volunteer firefighters who receive nothing. in digging further concerning the Scranton folks, why do you need longevity? bonuses?
i imagined that a paycheck for your services would suffice, just like everyone else is getting. who, in today's economy, is getting this? people are losing their jobs and homes and we need to provide no-cost health insurance (that's right, they don't pay into that), bonuses and longevity pay (getting paid a percentage of your yearly salary each year because you have a job)?
pay raises are a different matter, but even then, most jobs (and this IS a job) are experiencing pay FREEZES or REDUCTIONS.
It's not the age of the coal mines anymore and the stranglehold that unions have on the taxpayers is monumental. we are a city of 72,500 people, not the 125,000 from years' past.
let's see how much "brotherhood" there really is when the chips start to fall and people have to go. i see this as everyone's problem and no one truly wins. we all lose. well, except the people protected by these assinine contracts.
i guess there are no responses to the facts i presented. wonder who else caught the sign holders at the santa parade downtown? what a display. it seemed to me to be pathetic and sad. i'd love to make 80k by 2015, however i go to work hoping that i'll still have a job.
Sorry Vince I honestly don't know anything about the awards......I didn't catch the Santa parade but I did catch the Family court protest lol lol Baldy and his new babe,a table, about 4 others.....AND ONE SMALL CHILD. Whoever the parent was who brought him should be tarred and feathered.I hate when people use children to promote a political agenda.
I am no union advocate. I truly believe they are thing of the past and absolutely have bred a generation of crybabies. From the $30/hour teamster who can't drive the dumptruck because he's got a hangnail, to the healthy young maintenance guy who finds it beneath him to clean the toilet that got him the job.
Fire fighters and law enforcement are very important in ANY society and they earn their salaries every time they are called to an unknown situation or brush fire; either of which could turn truly dangerous. Give them a 3% raise across the board, just like my husband's union brothers got and be done with it already. And fire fighters, get over yourselves, take the raise, quitcher crying ... and be done with it already.
I don't know what the award details are ... so that in and of itself makes it very hard to respond to your post.
I am an advocate of Unions .... I do not believe that just because you are union it gives you an excuse not to do your job in fact I feel quite the opposite. Unions are not here to get bad workers out of trouble they are here to help the good workers to keep their rights from being violated. Unions provide a contract that spell out working conditions and some I must say have become what Girl describes ... but not all that are covered by a union are as she describes.
I know plenty of healthy young maintenance workers that are cleaning the toilets ... and cleaning up when kids have accidents on the floor ... be it spilled milk or when they are sick and they spill a bit of themselves onto the floor.
There are good and bad workers in every position out there ... Union and Non Union ... I really think that the whiners are just that whiners they will be the same no matter what ... if they have a union to back them or not ... they are still going to be whiners.

yeah yeah yeah ... you know me ... lump lump lump ...
My experience with unions stems from personal experience on multiple construction sites over the years. I've had guys come into my office trying to throw their weight around and trying to pull some Jimmy Hoffa bull$hit on me. I didn't crumble to it. The phrase "it's not my job" really sticks in my craw. But that's a far cry from working in the school district.
I would imagine you'd have to be a special person (union or otherwise) to work in an elementary school. I know I couldn't do it and God bless the people who can.
I was talking apples and you were talking oranges.
ok, let's hear anyone's comment on this. i keep hearing over and over about federal grants available for firefighters and yep, they are there for those interested in filing for them. my question is this, how come the union grant writer (salary @ $40,000) isn't doing that? does anyone think that the mayor stands over people's shoulders and tells them how to sharpen their pencils? that person gets paid a salary, what do they really do? what successful grants have they written?
If there is a grant writer then they should be damn well filing grants ... getting money for anything and everything ... but I don't work for the city ... I am not a firefighter ... so I can't speak to this ... I don't know that we have any firefighters or cops that post here ... but if this grant writier is not doing his/her job then they should be FIRED! Simple!
