why should the city of scranton have every pool open for free, when this happens no where else in the world? the world's beaches aren't even free.

further, i've seen what the drawings for the splash park at Novembrino would be and it looks amazing. the political football that council is throwing around stems from their ignorance. putting in this amenity would not eliminate all of the pools at that site, just one and possibly allow FAMILIES to enjoy this West Side site. oh and start your construction in September when the pools aren't open. that's a fabulous idea mr. lollipop counter, then the construction can run into the winter!!!

much ado about nothing!

Well for the "stupor majority" in konsil if they didn't complain then would have nothing to say.  It's their job...it's what they do.

Now if the plans were the brainchild of Ms Evans, well that would be a different story.

lol well I think given that Miss Clairol is so special.....maybe she can use some of that workman comp money to start a fund, and have fundraisers to raise more money to open and maintain all the pools??  Hayna?

Listen... the whole city is 25 square miles approximately....so even with my poor math skills I can manage to work this out to be 1 pool per 5.50 square miles. This means a pool is probably within 2.33 miles in any direction approximately.  Wow...what a hardship!  Seriously! No wonder the population is obese....no one wants to move anymore.  When I was kid, my friends and I  walked or rode our bikes to a pool which was over 2 miles from our house  almost everyday and we never thought anything of it. OH wait that's not true we thought about it everyday....we thought we were damn lucky to have a pool to swim in all summer long.

there's only one county pool, but it's still a place to go. i don't watch council meetings because they usually make me sick to listen to stupidity go on and on for hours, but someone told me that janet is appropriating money to open novembrino pool. is she going to get her lifeguard certification? hasn't anyone else had enough of this issue already. i certainly have.

Ms Evans isn't so much "pro-swimming for kids" as she is "pro-bashing the Mayor at any opportunity".  Insincerity oozes from her very pores.

Personally, I think the "splash park" is a much better...and safer...and cheaper...solution than the pool.  Sometimes, you just have to move on and leave your fond memories of "the community pool" where they belong...in the past.

Believe me, I can certainly understand what the neighbors surrounding Novembrino pool are going through. If you live anywhere in a eight block radius from a public pool, your home is affected (vandalism), your yard is affected (trash and God know what else), your airspace is affected (vulgarities out of the mouths of 9 year olds), and your resale base is affected because it is now considered detrimental to be in such close proximity to a public pool.

Sure it's good for the kids to be there and to enjoy the water on a hot summer day. But since they've got people like Jackowitz griping about people having to PAY to enjoy it, these parents and kids have got themselves a sense of entitlement. "Since I don't have to obey the rules to swim, I don't have to obey the general rules of common sense and daily life." Hence, they throw their crap in yards, they help themselves to swingsets and tents on private property along the way; and if they're called on it, the house gets egged, or the bricks get spray painted, or the car gets keyed or the plants and shrubs are trampled and destroyed, or they'll walk through yards and between houses where the don't belong, just to piss the homeowner off. Sometimes you can even find stolen bicycles hidden in the yard.

All I know it that if MY parents caught me doing one iota of any of this nonsense, I would have had my ass tanned with a belt or the business end of a hairbrush, and would have spent the rest of the summer doing work around my house. End of story.

Free swimming my ass. Let them and their irresponsible parents earn the right to use that 'free' pool, instead of people like you and me paying their way. We already donate to charities. Charities which truly help the needy.

AMEN!   Especially the part about the tanned asses...worse thing when I was kid that an adult could do would have been to call my mother about my behavior!!!! In those days your parents actually cared for and disciplined their children.  Best days of my life!

We behaved even better in front of other parents, because parents (mine anyway) back then had no qualms about other parents disciplining their kids. And then we'd got home and get the 'real' punishment from mom ... and then dad came home and gave us 'the talking-to'.

Kids today? They go home and brag about the crap they rained on other people that day.

... back to the subject at hand. Bill Jackowitz only does this kind of griping because he knows it will keep his name in the papers.

funny thing is, i don't believe any of the biggest gripers actually go to any of the pools. this is a political football and nothing else. they don't give a rat's a$% about any of these kids. maybe they should open up their backyard for everyone? ya listening, Janut?

VERY WELL PUT!!

If you listen to some of the Doomers, you'd swear that our Founding Fathers fought for the right to "life, liberty and free swimming in Scranton".  Note to the DD Toadies:  there IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE anything!  We, the taxpayers are paying for this stuff.  I have no problem subsidizing the cost of public parks, but I also don't think it's unreasonable to ask the people that use these places to help pay for the upkeep.  Also, if some of the pools can't open, then so be it. Scranton isn't 50 miles from end to end...if one pool is closed then *gasp* a parent might have to, God forbid, actually DRIVE their kids to a pool that is open.  Even worse, maybe some of these kids might have to walk a little futher in order to swim.  I know, I ask a lot.

What's next, is "Billy Jack" going to argue that the city should provide FREE transportation to city pools?

The reality there though is that NONE OF THIS has ANYTHING to do with swimming or kids and EVERYTHING to do with tawdry local politics.
