Nice post by Edith. I wonder if the dead reletives she's referring to are the ones she robbed estate money from. Funny thing about the morons at dd.com, none of them seem to know the obit policy, yet its doubtful any of them have ever dealt with any paper other than the Scranton Times when it comes to purchasing an obit.
For the record, the newspaper charges the funeral director, who passes the cost on to the family as part of the overall bill. Its sad, but true that dying costs money. Flowers, plots, funeral home, meals, etc. The cheapest thing associated with a death is the damn obit. I forgot, the newspaper is supposed to give away ink, paper, production costs, delivery costs, and personnel costs, but every other business is allowed to make money from the deceased.
Cheap and easy way to try to make the newspaper look like blood suckers. In journalism 101 you learn not to steal or plagiarize. This is a slam dunk for the Times. The Times Leader even admits they stole the obits. FU Edith.

I think your post was right on the money ... now and I don't know why I thought this way ... but I thought that when my mother died the funeral Director came to the house ... asked questions of us ... told us of the fee ... asked us if we wanted an obit ... we did ... then he told us he had to submit the information ... I always assumed (and I could be wrong) that information was given to a writer who tied it all together. Our Funeral Director is also a friend and well ... I know that he does not have a way with the written word ...
Any way that is how I assumed it worked! I guess I'm wrong.
