Pretty elitist sounding post from Glenn. Not his usual gentle blathering.

Scranton Times: Father Of The Year Award - 2008

"With 24 children living in different U.S. cities, the former boxer from Puerto Rico said Justin was his final child, and the only one he helped raise."

A true American hero. Someone should have checked the child support records across the country and arrested him...for anything.

Way to go, Jose. Spread that Harvard-educated seed around.

An interesting sidenote...these people seemed to spend more money at the tattoo parlor than on things like shampoo and toothpaste.

As much as children get on my last nerve, abandoning them to the elements and intentionally (or negligently) leaving them with a (most likely) struggling single parent is a sore spot of mine. It is the height of irresponsibility, and the "father" in question seemed to be speaking about it as though it were a merit badge. He should have 23 counts of missing child support against him. If you have 'em, you gotta take care of 'em. Jose did his thing and hit the road.

If the man were a better parent, his "final child" may not have been impregnating a 16-year-old girl (as an adult) and may not have put in the situation which ultimately led to his demise. But for the toddler, "final child" would not even have been at the house. Was the old guy responsible for the deaths? Of course not, and I would never infer such a thing. But the "Cheaper By Two Dozen" thing was infuriating and that was the sole purpose of the post.

Of course, the thread soon veered from "bad parenting" to "Doherty is a racist and white people are the devil" and I called it a day.

I have to get that Taipan.

Never let it be said that DD ever lets an opportunity go by to accuse Chris Doherty of some crime against humanity. Not content to simply lay the blame with Doherty for failing to negotiate contracts with the Police and Fireman unions, you have the DD crew accusing him of being behind the buldging death of three people. Give them credit for consistency though, because this is the group that has accused Chris Doherty of being the cause of a suicide and being neglegent in deaths of those two poor children in Green Ridge (Acker Avenue??).

As for Glenn and his tirade about Mr Sperm Donor, I see his point. I know that there is no relationship between the tragic deaths on S. Irving and some idiot that goes around planting more seed than an Iowa farmer, but you can't help but see that the whole situation is mired in a classic case of what's wrong with society today. Yes, there are murders in Beverly Hills too, but it just seems doubly wrong that the victims in this case never got past the crappy end of the American experience.

See, now I read that post and concentrated on the last paragraph ...

::: An interesting sidenote...these people seemed to spend more money at the tattoo parlor than on things like shampoo and toothpaste. :::

... because that was the very first thing I thought as I looked at the unwashed masses weeping around their neighborhood.

Elitist? No.

At the risk of sounding really elitist, how could you be poor but yet have money for beer, cigarettes and tattoos?

Just curious...

Most people would put aside their needs for cigarettes, beer and tattoos so they can buy a loaf of bread or maybe take their kids to swim at Nay Aug on a few hot days.
-----------------------------

... and just on a side note -- do any of you realize how much tattoos cost these days?

Personally, I don't have any and don't intend to have any tattoos. Granted some of these people who work in tattoo parlors are truly artists and aptly charge for their talents. But if it comes down to a child's "needs" as opposed to a parent's "wants" -- the kids should come out on top every time.

I'll take a bet that the "2008 Father of the Year" will have his son's face tattooed on his body in the near future.

I don't get the whole tattoo thing myself, but my oldest daugther has two of them. Different strokes for different folks I guess. As for the cost, I think one of hers ran about $30, if I am not mistaken. Granted that what Thursday said is true: some of the people that run Tattoo parlors are truly artists, so they should charge a decent price for their work. However it all comes down to "me", "me", "me" for some people; they don't have enough money to buy food so they need an Access Card...but yet they pay cash for the smokes. Same thing for the beer. Oh, and I don't buy the "but the poor people need something to enjoy themselves, so let them have their beer and smokes" argument; Hell, I would really enjoy having a 1982 Porsche 944 in red...but my family obligations (college tuition, clothes, food, etc.) mean that I have to put aside my "wants" for my family "needs".

Somehow personal responsibility has given way to personal desire.
