Now that the Mayor has announced, lets see who can keep up with him, Financially, Politically, and Socially. My guess is no one will have the Stamina, the finances, or the ability to organize a large crowd in order to maintain the rigors of a 2 year campaign. So let the wannabees come and be DooBees, cause its 4 more years, and lots of more beers. Good Luck Mayor Doherty, and I got your back.......

Pretty sad when people's votes can be bought for some free beer. Its amazing how many people really don't look at the issues and use their heads when deciding for whom to vote. But its obvious that voters are either apathetic and/or stupid when you look at our government as a whole, from the White House right on down to local politics.

This town elected Jimmy Connors for 3 terms, and might elect Chris Doherty for 3 terms. My statement that people in this city are apathetic and/or dumb is right on the money.

Doherty's re-election hinges not so much on what he's done or plans to do, but more so...I believe...on who runs against him.

Janet Evans...who here would vote for that lady for any elected office? I know she got a lot of votes when she ran for council, but she also got trashed in her bid for State Rep. Besides, what does this tell you about the lady:
...she gets herself elected to School Board (with he 15 year old photo, BTW)
...uses the School Board to get herself a Teaching position
...she gets elected to council and tries to use that position to get elected to State Rep (and with that failing to work, is considering a run for mayor).
ANYONE ELSE SEEING A PATTERN HERE????

Gary DiBileo...nice guy, but seems to lack a spine when it comes to making difficult choices.

Given a choice between the two (Evans or DiBileo), I'd pick Gary in a heartbeat....at least his spouse isn't psychotic. However, neither stand a chance against Doherty.

I personally will move to the summit if Doherty wins again. I can't stand pilchesky....but I think this mayor has his "circle of wealth" and nothing more....sad day in Scranton to have Doherty for four years.

Doomer, who (in your opinion) would make a good Mayor?

I believe that neither Gary DiBileo nor Janet Evans will be running for mayor. They will both bow out for someone new who has an Irish last name and a track record of winning elections. When the mayor realizes he is facing a one-on-one with this person, he too will decide not to run.

As they say someplace else, just my humble "opion".

Yeah, all six of them. If you combined that with the twelve Italian votes, you may have a solid voting block for committeeman. Look at the school board and council races last year. No matter how much you believe ethnicity doesn't matter, it does. The Dems are already looking for an Italian from the Mid Valley for commissioner in 2011.

Ridiculous? Objectively, sure. But this be Lackawanna County.

I know how the game is played Glenn. I live in South FLA now, you think an Irish last name stands a chance in an election. Every city council person in my town is Cuban. People vote for what they know and trust. I'm Irish, grwoing up the older Irish people in my neighborhood would say "those Round heads up the line" or the "the Wops in west side" And no doubt they where calling us Micks. Rediculous? objectivly, sure, but this is Lackawanna County.

::: ... I believe that neither Gary DiBileo nor Janet Evans will be running for mayor ... :::

I don't see why DeBileo or Evans WON'T run ... heaven knows they won't have to stand up to any of the bull$hit scrutiny across the hall that everyone else does. The Golden Girl herself greases those wheels during every council meeting, doesn't she?

If Glenn is correct in his belief (hmmm) maybe there's more swept under her carpets than she is letting on. Wouldn't THAT be a fun topic?

(hah, Glenn said "opion")

Ethnicity does matter, but...in my "opion" it's mattering less and less as generations move away from (insert relative name here) that came over from County Spud in "the old country". People in the current generation haven't stuck to "their kind"; the DiBileo family, for example, is composed of an Italian (Gary) and his Irish wife (Christine). Fifty years ago this would have been reason enough for a shunning. Now it's to be expected and people are...gasp...crossing racial lines. People view their identity with a bit more complexity these days.

The above said, I think people will vote in blocks for other reasons. Afterall, we are social creatures, and existing within a pack seems to be hardwired into genes.

As for your scenario Glenn, it sounds intreguing. If you are right and Ms Evans doesn't run for Mayor, then what office will she aspire to? It's pretty clear that political ambition runs through her veins like THC does through a DeadHead.

Personally, I see people (even the cream of the crop) shying away from any political race because $hitbird across the hall will have them scrutinized for the jaywalking citation they got when they were twelve. There might be an upstanding citizen out there who is PERFECT for a certain political position and we'll never know it - sad

That has been my concern for quite awhile now. If this continues, we can forget ever getting a normal decent human-being to run for any office. Who would ever want to be assaulted like this and who would allow their families to be put through this as well?

Do I believe we shouldn't discuss public figures?? Of course not, scutiny is the only thing we have to insure they are doing the job we elect them to do. However, there is a huge difference between job scrutiny and the character assasinations that go on endlessly across the hall. Truth, rumor, outright lies... no difference! If you think it.. write it. It makes no difference to the slimeballs across the hall who they sling dirt at, young, old, or child, nor does is seem to matter if it is true or untrue. Joey can always pretend he cares by saying if you don't come up with proof he will take it down in 24 hours, that insures enough time for people to see it and spread it, long before it is removed (if it ever is) I can't imagine any decent person ever wanting to put themselves out there, in this current climate.

This of course shouldn't in anyway discourage Miss Clairol as she doesn't seem to have a scruple left. She can probably count on getting a pass (professional courtesy) from the "bottom feeders" (Joey's affectionate term for his followers).

I am adding the below post as proof of my statements.

The nuts next door just throw out an accusation of someone being a pediphile. Any outrage from the bottom dwellers?? Nope. Try to make a negative comment about Miss Clairol and see what happens. Joey will ride in to protect his special friend and the banning will begin! What does Joey do about these horrible comments? Nothing! Oh notice the dates on the posts, just in case you think he may not have "gotten to it" yet.

Lemonhead b 4 he became chief

This is just too funny, you know he kind of looks like the man himself. Acts like him too, just have to incorporate one with a couple of hookers and/or college girls from what I understand he was very good friends with when he was on patrol.

I heard back a few years he coached WS basketball, girls about 15. Most of the team quit because of him and it was not because he was a tuff

sorry it took so long to answer your question.....First, i would vote for Doherty over Evans, for the simple fact that I know what we have now (don't like it) but I think Evans will be worse because of her "followers." I think Gary D would be better than Evans, however he tried once and people will see he is "somewhat" weak.

So to answer you question "who." I would vote for ANYONE but Janet Evans against Doherty,
Who besides Gary D will run, I have no clue. I voted for Doherty the first time because we needed direction and change, however Doherty's arrogance is to strong for my liking.

You need alot of money to beat him, who has that no one I know.

Apparently, there is something in the wind about Tommy Gilbride running for mayor, however you never can separate fact from fiction over there.

That would be interesting, and if it's true, Todd O'Malley ought to just run himself.

Yeah, lets consider the source. How much other stuff that was supposedly "in the wind" never actually got off the ground? There's just not enough bandwidth to list it all.

Taylor, you may just want to ask Lee Morgan your question. He has some background on the issue. biggrin

Your supposed to live in the city ... however Ag is right Mr. Morgan has experience on running for an office in Scranton while living in the Abingtons ... and nobody ever seems to question him ... maybe because they know he can't win.

The only question you have to ask your self is why would some one spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to become mayor for a job that pays 50.000 a year?

Why do we have to ask ourselves that? It's a silly question. It's not like he's financing it out of his own pocket. Various people, groups, and PACs are financing it for him.

The President of the US earns $400K a year. The 2004 election cost the candidates over a billion dollars. This year, it will probably cost more than that. Who spends in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars for a less than half a million dollar a year job? It's basically the same question with different figures...

The answer is, they don't. We do.

Every political rally you attend ... generates funds for a campaign. Even if they call it a free rally there is always someone there selling a 50/50 ticket ... or raffling off something. They pay nothing usually for these parties as everything you have (beer, soda and food) is donated ... so they make the money off of the raffels and 50/50 sales. Not to mention that people are continuously writing checks or donating cash so that they can one day tell that politician that they are owned some sort of favor. So Paul is right it's not that the candidates are spending thier own money ... they are spending the money that we the public donate in one way or another to fund the campaign. You would be amazed at how much cash actually flows in from so many sources. Check out a financial report of any candidate it will tell you how much money is raised to fund a campaign.

Why does a School Board Candidate spend thousands of dollars for a job that pays nothing? Again the answer is they don't.

I have a better question. ( at least I think it is a better question LOL) Since the only reason so much money is necessary in the first place, isbecause advertising (of all kinds) is so darn expensive. My question is .......why do we not designate a set amount of Adv time to be used for each race divided equally over the candidates. So that the companies providing the service do not take a hit we would need a funding source to be established. The amount designated would, of course, be in keeping with the level of the race. A school board race would get much less than mayoral race for instance and so on. This then would mean the bulk of a candidates adv would be covered leaving the lesser amounts to be covered by the fund raising. Any thoughts?

You mean level the playing field? That's not exacty fair to the ones who have more support and more backing.

Candidate A, a popular incumbent who is expected to raise $1 million dollars for their campaign and easily gain 70% of the vote should not be made to evenly split time/funds/resources with some nameless, faceless candidate with a chip on his shoulder who is running on a platform of hate. For example, under your plan, David Duke would have been afforded equal time and money to spread his KKK platform in '88 with legitimate presidential candidates, such as Gore, Dukakis, Jackson on the D side, and in '92 with Bush Sr on the R side.

I think the system we're working now has worked more or less fine for over 200 years.
