What the hell is the huge tirade about a city employee lending a hand during a fire and using a city vehicle? It's pissing me off.
If he picked up a fire hose to help ... "ohhh, he's not a fireman" can't do that If he directed vehicular traffic away from the area ... "ohhh, he's not a policeman" can't do that If he directed pedestrian traffic away from the area ... "ohhh, he's not a boy scout" can't do that If he directed the rubber-neckers with their cameras away from the blaze... "ohhh, my civil rights, my first amendment" can't do that If he gave the eye-talian bishop a leg-up at the curb ... "ohhh, city employee, church and state" can't do that
If this man or any man just stood there with his thumb up his arse and did nothing, these thick bastards across the hall would have every reason to bitch and complain. All this guy did was to help is a tense situation. Most likely the furthest thing from his mind was getting his ass reamed and his reputation sullied by doing a GOOD thing.
In the words of one of their their own ... this is not meant to degrade ... this is meant to RIDICULE the thick bastards across the hall. Jesus H - get a life, stop your incessant whining and pick a battle worth fighting for already.

It wasn't "what was done" it was "who was doing it" that was the problem. God forbid someone they don't like should do something good get any positive attention for the city. If miss clairol had been in Mr Brazil's shoes, used a city car and her own (like she ever would, not!) elbow grease to help out a citizen they would be calling for her to be canonized. They are just misrable, poor excuses for human beings, and I for one am tired of their constant bitching. I am not sure what they need more, a laxative or a good romp in the hay. Fay looks like she could use both, frankly. Fat chance that will happen!

Seems to me that they love to slam on Jeff Brazil ... and it seems to me that Jeff can take it ... he seems totally unaffected by all of this ... from what I understand he said that he did do it ... and he would do it again because he feels that it was his job to do it as he works for the DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS ...
I don't think that there was anything wrong with what he did ... although I have read that Mr. Hubbard thought that those paintings were just fine sitting out on the street ... even thought the weather is so unpredictable ... who cares if they get wet ... they were not in danger of burning ... and how dare someone from the Department of PUBLIC WORKS take these painting to the EVERHART ... oh wait a minute ... isn't the EVERHART a city owned museum .. OH my God the Plot thickens ... how dare they put those painting there for safe keeping!
Dan Hubbard and Joe Pilchesky obviously have no life if this bothers them ... if this is the big scandal of the moment then I think that we are doing good.
Let find the real problems boys ... lets come up with solutions to those problems and present them in a dignified manner ... and maybe things will get better ... be a part of the solution not the problem ... I think the bigger problem of that day had to do with PPL not wanting to shut down the power ...that was the real problem that day ... get pissed about that ...

For all the supposedly illegal acts being perpetrated by city government, all the kickbacks, constitutional transsgressions, corruption, etc, etc, etc, all the wonder twins can come up with is some nonsense about paintings?
Jesus Christ, those two can't even get it straight which one of them was there, for how long, and doing what. This city would be so much better without the both of them.
When they saw this infraction taking place, did either of them say to themselves ... "Hmmm, why don't I offer my own vehicle to transport these items so a City vehicle won't need to be used?"
NO -- It took their mentality to snap away the whole time thinking "Gotcha!"
No, boys -- don't bother helping, just stand there with one hand full of camera and the other hand full of your chubby.

There are liability issues, and he probably shouldn't have transported the paintings. However, I don't see why removing them from a burning building is such an issue. I mean, if it were a pet store, are you just going to let the kittens roast?
The liability would be hers, not the city's. Yet another non-story from the Pilchesky camp. Maybe he was helping on his lunch break, day off, coffee break, etc. Maybe he's management and has the right to decide if he wants to take 10 minutes off from work and help a citizen. What a bunch of freakin' morons. How critical of the local media would Joe be if they covered candy ass stories like this?
I remember one time when a district manager came in to look over our grocery store. He was a mean S.O.B., and always found someting to complain about. Generally, we never failed to disappoint him in his quest for the sub-par, but this one time, he exploded over dirty shelf molding on the bottom shelf in one aisle. Went absolutely ballistic.
After he left, our manager was beaming ear to ear. "If he has to look at shelf moldings to find something to get mad about, I'd say we're in pretty decent shape, fellas."
If that idiot Pilchesky has to stoop to asking for an investigation into a guy helping to move paintings from next door to a burning building, then clearly all this kickback talk and corruption nonsense and all the other accusations if illegal acts by the mayor and administration is completely unfounded crap, otherwise someting would have stuck by now.
If Janet Evans would have been the one helping to remove the paintings, the posting at DD would center around how city services failed once again and how Janet Evans saved the day.
My opinion? I'm just glad the business was helped. Hell, if I were there I would have lent a hand (well right after taking pictures of Danny taking pictures).

They went there to take pictures guys ... nothing more ... although I do think I read at DD (so it must be true) that Dan helped remove those same painting from the building ... but it was his opinion that they were perfectly safe sitting out on the street in cold weather that could have turned bad at any moment ... or that the mist of the fire hoses could have caused water damage ... Dan said they were out of the building so that should have been good enough!
Joe is the kind of guy that will criticize other's for not running into a burning building ... even if they don't know what they are doing ... but it's perfectly alright for him to stand outside and criticize and then take pictures of everything that he believes is wrong ... so he can have something he feels is newsworthy to put up on DD.
Seems as though Dan is following closely in Pappa Pilchesky's footsteps ... but wasn't it Dan who stated that he had no time for the DD nonsense ... seems like he has nothing but time for all kinds of nonsense!

Any City Employee, who is paid by the tax payers, has an obligation to protect and preserve any Person or their Property within the City Limits. PERIOD, DONE. Job well done as far as all tax payers are concerned,, find some real crime to report.

The problem, as I see it is the DPW helped a private business. DPW stands for Department of PUBLIC works. It is next to impossible toget the DPW to clearstreets where I live, even days after a snow storm. But they came very quickly to helpa store.
I don't see what they did as totally wrong, butevery citizen should get the same service...and they don't.
First, welcome to PD Balko. It's always great to have a new poster.
Second, I guess I agree with your post, to an extent. Yes, they should do a better job on the streets, but let's face reality: they will never do a good enough job for everyone on every task they perform. As for helping a business, I would agree that this situation is a real issue IF there was another business that asked for help in a similar situation but was refused. However, I don't think this is the case here. Regardless, this whole issue seems to me to be 90% Pilchesky/Hubbard hype, 10% real issue.
More interesting for me is the notion that you have someone like little Danny Hubbard walking around Scranton LOOKING FOR ANY LITTLE CONTROVERSY, camera on the ready. If this is the best he can come up with...DPW workers aiding a private business by preventing damange to paintings...then he truly is pathetic. He would be better off spending his time preparing for the pasting he is going to get in the courtroom courtesy of Daron Northeast.

I happened to be in an office with a pretty good vantage point and view of the fire and the surrounding area. As with any fire situation, there were quite a bit of folks just standing around watching.
I wonder why some man ... any man (whether it be a strapping young boy, old fart or regular Joe Citizen) who happened to be standing around watching the fire blaze away didn't offer assistance to the woman ... any woman (whether it be Donna Doherty or Janet Evans or the owner of a the shop) who was hauling painting after painting from a building didn't offer assistance.
The fact that no one even offered assistance but a few had the audacity to just stand by and snap pictures says alot for our citizenry. Chivalry is dead and gone, it seems
Dan Hubbard is quickly eclipsing Pilchesky as the biggest joke this city has. He's approaching the Lyman mystique. His family must be so proud. To his credit, though, he has the sack to actually come out and speak in front of council about whatever issue is on his feeble little mind that week. Pilchesky will do nothing more than "threaten" to take the podium.
I have to say, Dan Hubbard isn't one of my favorite people, but at least he makes an effort when he comes before council. The boy is combing his hair these days, instead of showing up in that ratty baseball hat and that wannabee-Lee-Morgan sweatshirt. I'll even go so far as to say some of the shinola that comes out of his mouth isn't "all wrong". But he's got to re-think his blossoming affection of pilcheski. He's got too many years ahead of him to start being such a jackass at such a young age.
But his "message" is being lost in the presentation. If he wasn't such a smug, arrogant prick, he might have gotten a couple things accomplished. Instead, he'd rather just blast everything for the sheer theatrics of it all, and get nothing at all done. His behavior has got to be an embarassment to not only his neighborhood association, but his family as well. His connections to Pilchesky make him even harder to take seriously, if it would even be possible otherwise.
