If one really feels the need to put one's maiden name in parentheses or quotation marks to make a family connection (which is what I feel it usually is, rather than an ethnic connection), I have no problem whatsoever.

However, specifically targeting communities with a certain ethnic majority by "food-dropping" items like pierogies and then actually using the terms "them" and "us" in strictly ethnic terms is reprehensible and demonstrates nothing but contempt for the very voter one is trying to persuade. Mrs. Cordaro even threw in her "hunky" maiden name.

"Janet Tomko Evans" is not the same. That was Janet making a connection to her father, not the ethnicity of his last name.

This letter was the equivalent of someone sending a flyer to the black community with a menu containing "fried chicken", "watermelon" and "lemonade". Simply stupid.

As a side note, I think it was Dick Laske that used the word 'Hunky'* during a council speech a few years ago...I nearly fell off a kitchen chair laughing my a$$ off. I think John Pocius was laughing as well. It's just not a word you hear very often, so Glenn gets extra credit for creativity.


(*) Hunky is the equivalent to the 'N-Word' when applied to eastern European immigrants....equivalent, well, if this were 1912.

the Janet "just-in-case-you-dont-know-me Tomko" Evans really pisses me off as well.

If she has to make sure people know she is so-and-so's child, and she can't make it to the top on her very own name and merits, then she should stay at the bottom of the slag heap where she belongs.

But, she might feel the need to use the "quotes" because the Tomko is more important to her and to draw attention away from the fact that she is now an Evans. You never know ...

Wait a minute...she's a TOMKO???? Damn, I didn't know that...forget every bad thing I've ever said about her...

...it was a coincidence that she got teaching job while sitting on the school board
...she married a really nice guy
...her son is a bright young man with an astute political eye
...I truly enjoy her 'one word a minute' speaking style
...she's the hardest working teacher at Scranton High

Ray Lyman, who apparently has flopped to the 'other' side, went on a terse attack of the union reps and the Pilcheskys tonight at council. Lyman being Lyman, one would think that he'd never get more than a yawn for his efforts after his YouTube 15 minutes of fame, but Dave Evans had other ideas. Mr. Evans, ever ready to disgrace his dignified councilwoman wife, showed up and confronted Lyman about his comments at the podium. Of all people, Ray Lyman, gets a bite out of Dave Evans. At any rate, Dave got the attention he was looking for from Scranton's finest. Your heart just has to ache for Janet. I thought that the only person who would give the likes of Ray Lyman the time of day would be another Ray Lyman, and it seems that's exactly who gave it to him.

This is not the first time that Mr. Evans has wigged out on Lyman. It is clear to most people that Lyman is not playing with a full deck of cards, and should thus be cut a little slack. Amazingly, Mr. Evans fails to recognize this.

Vintage Dave Evans. Janet would have it easier pulling around a 50 ton anchor. God love her. To have so much potential and so little time to put it to her credit with a man like that in her life. Here she is standing at the threshold of moving up to mayor, and he tightens the screw a little more. I like Janet Evans, and I like her a great, great deal. I never met her and I don't have to, what I see on council suits me just fine, but her husband just has to somehow be silenced. My friends tell me that his conduct has been like this since she stepped into the public's eye. Obviously, she's helpless to reel him in.

Apparently there is trouble in Camelot this evening. Looks like the rock of Scranton's political movers and shakers - the Kennedy'sEvan's Klan Leader had a slight melt down this evening. He should have went over to help Chris with his basketball practice, or stayed at the bar.

Boy I wonder what the reaction would be if someone asks JaNut or DaviD about the email screening. I look forward to David being the first LAdy of Scranton when JaNut becomes mayor. Gee JaNut you couldn't ask for anything better.

I personally give Ray Lyman all the credit in the world. He had something to say and he said it. Did he have a little motivation or did 'someone' coach him? What does it matter? Who cares? This is America. Let free speech flow. There's nothing more valuable than politically antagonistic free speech, even if it incorporates a few personal jabs. There is, however,something hypocritical about using your free speech to criticize others doing the same, as we do here, but in my short period of time involved in the political wars in this area, I suggest to those who want to get their feet politically wet that the barometer used to gauge your durability around here isn't how much you can dish out, because we can all dish it out, rather, it's how much you can take. I've learned a great, great deal from ChrisDoherty, andof the things I've learned, the only thing I truely admire is that the guy can take a beating without blinking, at least notpublicly. Behind the scenes is a different story, but that's where quality retaliation is practiced anyway. When you let the frog in the pond get the best of you, what's tohappen when the shark zeroes in on you? Not a good thing to respond adversely to Ray Lyman when he is doing what weall enjoy doing, speaking freely.

There's a silver lining to this dark cloud. Recently, as my son was holding the door open for me, our German Shepard, Sparky, hit the road for the good life of roaming the streets. I haven't seen him in two weeks. That said, I have a nicevacated dog coop that comes with a pretty strong chain. Three squares meals and a roof over your head.
