Who isgoing to get rich from the 8.1 million more that the school district is going to pay for the new middle school ? WOWI can't believe they aren't going to be held to task for that one. Watch then they will blame the tax increase on the upcoming teachers contract.

I will not vote for Jim Minicozzi due to his opposition to the construction of the new Scranton High School. It wasn't just opposition to the school on his part...he PANDERED to the likes of Fay 'Foam @ the Mouth' Franus in his opposition to the school, something I can never forgive. It's one thing to take a stand on an issue, it's another to align yourself with a nincompoop like Franus.
Now to be fair, I did actually ask Mr Minicozzi about this issue before the primary, and he did respond to me (twice no less), but I didn't find his answers to my questions too convincing. Yes, I think the Scranton School District spends far too much money, but new schools represent one of the best investments that we, as taxpayers, can make in our communities. I've shown co-workers from out of state the new Scranton HS and they are really impressed. As a parent with one child a graduate and two attending the school, I am glad that they have world class educational facilities at their disposal. If Mr Minicozzi had his way, my kids would be attending the oldest functioning high school in the Commonwealth. Our children deserve better.
Lastly, I think Art hit the nail in the head...what's needed isn't blind opposition to new schools, but accountability in how the money for these new schools is spent.

Dead on correct Agam! I also am aware that he and those other loons he ran with all have their names on the Scranton High School dedication plaque. They campaigned against the school but had no problem taking credit for it after the fact. Hypocrites!
A new building is in the best interest of the kids and the community. The old Scranton High while prefectly fine in it's time had outlived it's usefulness as a high school. The kids needed and deserved a school which would support their educational needs for the 21st centuary, not a building designed for the 20th century. In addition, the area where the school was build was run down and underdeveloped before the school was built and look at it now. New business, nicer looking area, much more attractive to new business interests who are scouting out new areas for development. My only request to the school board on this building project is, build it right and be conservative (not cheap) in how you spend the money. If they do that everyone wins.

IHave has hit the nail on the head with her post ...
I personally do not think that increasing class size to 35 students per class is the way to go ... I don't think that Mr. Minicozzi knows what he is talking about ... in this day and age of inclusion ... where all students are included in the same classes ... special needs children will be left behind ... they need help ... not only special needs children ... but all children will have less of an education as increasing the size of classes will make it less likely that they will be able to have any one on one interaction with the teacher ... so I have to say that I am not finding it very appealing to see Mr. Minicozzi make it back for another shot at being a School Director ...
And RTP who gets screwed in the end the teachers or the children? I'm not criticizing you ... I am just asking a question.

Is the district about educating children ... or is it about personal property taxes ... I know that the taxes are high ... but we can't sit and bitch that they need new books, computers ... etc and then say that we don't want our taxes to go up ... books and technology are very costly items and we can't have it both ways.
Our Schools are over crowded ... they need more space as parents don't like it when we turn stairwells and closets into classrooms ... again we can't have it both ways ... think about it!

My wife teaches at Kennedy elementary, and the over-crowding situation is horrible...so much so that they now use the old St Mary's school for 4th & 5th grades.

In addition to the obvious (at least to me anyway) downside to dramatically increasing class sizes, I am certain that class size is established in the teachers contract. No matter how good intended his idea maybe he has about as much chance of changing contract language on that issue as he has of sprouting wings and circling the admin building. Also I am certain Special Ed class size is regulated by the Fed's. It is a much more difficult thing to inplement your ideas than it is to just state them. I always follow up any candidate's comments with the question..."How, and be specific, will you implement your ideas?"

I personally do not think it is wise to impliment this particular idea ... the education of the children will suffer greatly!

Over the next few Shool Board elections we shall see if the public really does care about who takes donations from who, and who gets the jobs. If this donation thing doesn't allow Hartman, Lesh, McGuigan, Minicozzi, and whoever else wins to take over the school board well then shame on us voters. I really think all we want to do is complain, and not try too make any change.

I think it's more that while people want change, the people who run don't seem that much different the ones already in office. Not sure, but that is my impression of what people think.
Thats interesting and I have to agree with you on that thought, but its the people that must force the candidates running to promise for change, or else get them out.. the power of voting is very strong if used properly..
