Scranton 1958, John Murphy and the ICN? John Murphy was also a cheerleader for the U of S. In the early 1960s, the U of S development board saturated NE PA with people "asking for participation from each towards the overall goal of the university to complete its building program."
The U of S needed 1,836,000 to compete the first library and student center, so the development board sent people out to beg for money from poor catholics in the community, telling them that by contributing to the U of S they are contributing to development and 'progress' of the area. Even then, in the 1960s, boosters were calculating how much U of S students contributed to the area.
The U of S has always been a deceptive leech.

OK. the Uof S did Use donations for the Library and does use donations from Alumni and donators who willingly donate to the school for any building costs.
Mr. Harry Weinberg who was a very large business man and philanthropist donated massive amounts of money to the U for the building of the library. He was a major donatro to many things in scranton such as the YMCA ect. HE was a major contributor to the library and was the catalyst of its being built. The U does not prey on anyone. That is why the Brand new one comp-leted a few years ago was named in his honor. He also contributed that that one massivly as well.
These posters lie in almost every post. Speculation and rumors do not constitute the truth!
It's pretty obvious who put up the cash for that - or any other building - the guy who's name is on it. Just like the Kania Building, the McGowan Center, etc. The people who pay for the building get the big name on it. Not sure what they're trying to prove, but Weinburg's name is everywhere in NEPA.
Also i don't want to start another thread but I wanted to adress the thread on DD where joe put up a ten year old law suit made by Atty Kurtz. I want to know where all the rumors and lies spread by Kurtz about Minora, Barasse and co. came to fruition. Why is he not posting the outcome. Why is he nots posting the out come of kutrz.
Also, in regards to Jamie Brazil, they are lynching him right now over there yet it is all on gossip colomnists from the web and the gossip colomnists from the PHILLY papers. He was associated with ALI and so where manyh many others all over PA. Does this atomatically lead to guilt of something.
NONE of them have any clear definable issue to bring up other than some hearsay. Talk about facts and back them up.......oh you can;t because you have nothing to go on other than your rumors.
Gee, let's ponder what the Hill Section of Scranton would look like without the University of Scranton. Beirut anyone?
"Oh, but they don't pay taxes and they take properties off the tax rolls!"
Yeah, but how many of those buildings weren't paying taxes to begin with? As far as the University not paying taxes is concerned, I suggest that the professional whinners at DD write their representatives in Congress and ask them to repeal section the section of the tax code that makes universities tax-exempt.

As I said before, as it concerns Judge Minora, this may be the episode where Joey jumps the shark! I believeI can hear a motorboat engine water ski's anyone?
Scranton 1958, John Murphy and the ICN? "the first library and student center" meaning NOT the Weinberg library, but the one before it. (Wasn't it called the "Alumni Memorial Library"?).
The Weinberg library wasn't built in 1960 (isn't it obvious by looking at it?).
Please see March 23 1960 p 31 of the Scranton Times "U of S Drive for 1,836,000: Campaign to Reach Every Family."
The U of S took many donations from area residents over the years. Today, library staff at U of S don't want to help you if you're not a student (not that any of them can possibly help me. Nor would I even ask). And good luck getting a computer. They moved the computers for visitors away from the reference desk (where it was under their close surveillance) to the main computer area. Now locals have to compete with students for computers.
The growth of the U of S could not be possible if not for Scranton's decline.
I love this post...
How DARE the University not wait on people like The Grinch when they enter the University's library! The Horror!!
How DARE the University not provide free computers in an easy to use location for use by people like The Grinch! The Inhumanity of it all!!
How DARE the University allow STUDENTS first crack at University equipment! The audacity of those darn Jesuits!!
Personally I've never been in the University's Library, but then again I'm not a student there nor am I an alumni; come to think of it, The Grinch probably isn't one either...so perhaps he/she should stop pouting like a jilted 8th grade girl. Better yet, maybe The Grinch can go get some free government cheese and then complain about the taste.
