City picking up another demolition tab for private development Stirna's at Providence Square. I believe this is the chief of police's mother in law.
Theres also a chance the improvements could change the West Market Street skyline. Mayor Chris Doherty said Mrs. Gavin has shared with him plans to purchase the former Providence TV building, a location known for frequent police calls. He said the city would be willing to demolish the property to improve the block.
RE: City picking up another demolition tab for private development MRS. GAVIN IS DEFINITELY THE MOTHER-IN-LAW OF LEMONHEAD ELLIOT. BUT WHY SHOULD SHE BE AN EXCEPTION? LIL ARTIE RUSSO HAD THE FACTORY ON BRYN MAWR ST. TAKEN DOWN GRATIS BY THE CITY. I'M SURE THERE ARE OTHERS, BUSINESS AS USUAL IN OUR FAIR CITY.
RE: City picking up another demolition tab for private development FORGOT THIS THOUHT.THE AREA OF C&R MUST BE A HOT BED OF DISORDERLY CONDUCT, EVERYONE KNOWS BY THE UNIFORM CRIME STATISTICS THAT THERE ARE NO SERIOUS CRIMES IN THE CITY. I'D LIKE TO KNOW JUST WHAT CRIMES HIS NIBS IS REFERRING TO.
I would like to know when it was that Mayor Doherty claimed that Scranton was crime free ...
And here is the thing ... I do not believe that he is claiming that the Providence TV building has serious crime ... what he is saying is simply this ... it is the source of frequent police calls ... now forgive me ... if I messed up ... does that translate into serious crime of does it simply mean that the police are always being called to this location ... am I having a serious comprehension problem ... or does it mean what it says ... the police are frequently called to this location ... that could mean domestic calls ... it could mean that possibly tennants are not getting along with each other ... it could mean that Jimmy Stuckart calls when he seems to be having a problem getting paid for unsolicted work he has performed ... or a possible scooter sighting ... it does not necessarily mean that there are murderers and drug deals going down at this location ...
Why in the world would we have a problem with Stirna's wanting to "improve" the neighborhood ... if the owner of the Providence TV building is willing to or has sold the building to Cathy Gavin ... who are we to tell her that she should not want to utilize this building in a way that will be profitable to her business ...
I'm just trying to understand this ... and what in the world does her being Chief Elliots mother-in-law have to do with this ... she has been in business there for many more years than she's been the Chief's mother in law ... I'm just saying.
You all want improvements ... yet when someone tries to make improvements you all start bitching ... I just don't get it!

City picking up another demolition tab for private development I guess this is why the city was trying to shut down that rooming house on W. Market Street to make way for the DOObee in-law's restoring the pride? All of a sudden, there were violations that never existed before and way too many police calls. The owner must have been fed up with the city's threats and sold to doobee in-law, Stirna's. How convenient. Nice job, DO!!!!

Is it that there were no violations ... or is it simply that these vilations have been happening for years ... but until now nobody really paid attention? I would think that they would have to have documented violations ... and I do believe that the rooming house you are reffering to is further up W. Market St. and not the property that Mrs. Gavin is having demolished for improvements ... The property she is demolishing would be to the right of Stirnas ... and the rooming house is on the left and there is the Pocius Building in between Stirna's and the rooming house ... I just thought that I would clarify this for you all!

They aren't happy unless they're bitching about something or somebody. I guess since Joe was denied his ramp, hell has to be paid somewhere down the line. Pointing fingers is what they all do best, Lus.
Everyone else (Read that as Joe) just have houses that have been in various degrees of disrepair for years, sidewalks left unshoveled, cars parked on the lawn, yards filled with construction debris, etc.
Take a ride down the 800 of Sunset someday and guess which house "the carpenter" owns. I guess he's too busy not working on other jobs to fix his own dump.
we should all be happy thiat someone is buying these and going to either demolish them or fix them up. These guys over there are sooooooo jealous of everyone else. Soo pathetic..
I think Cathy Gavin has a great story actually ... she worked for Johnny Stirna for years and when he passed away she and her husband decided (even though they are Irish) to carry on this business as Johnny Stirna (Lithuanian) would do ... what does that say for the legacy that this man has left behind ... and she has done a wonderful job ... the place is thriving ... she is paying taxes on the place ... and not just property taxes ... but all of the taxes that business owners must bear ... you think it's hard being a property owner of a home ... try owning a business ... it says something that this business is about you realize 100 years of service to the community ... can you just imagine ... and she is now trying to make improvements to the business and because she is the Chief's mother-in-law ... she should be denied ... I don't think so ... she's owned the place since 1979 ... and I thank her for the employment opportunities she has given to people over those years ... I applaud her for not letting her place of business to become run down ... Keep up the good work and thank you for what you have given back to your community over the years that Stirna's has been in business! And good luck with the new renovations ... I can't wait to stop in!
And if Joe Pilchesky and his goons are against you ... well then I say you must be doing something right! I guess they would rather go to a chain like oh ... say ... Johnny Rockets ... but not me ... give me the big old juicy Stirna burger over chain burgers anyday!

Indeed you are correct Girl and Lus! Staff at Stirna's is the best! Love it there! Cathy worked like a dog (and still does) and she earned everything she has...more power to her!
Everyone that knows north scranton , knows 2 things, Stirna's is a nice clean place and the rooming house has been a problem for years and yes they have pulled a few bodies out of there. Everyone is thrilled about cathy's choice to tear it down.
You know what tooltime ... unless it's in your own neighborhood ... or unless you know someone from the neighborhood that speaks about the rooming house then you just don't care about the problems that it presents ... this is something the DD'ers don't care about ... but I applaud Cathy Gavin for making improvements to the neighborhood ... 100 years in business says something for the quality of service that these people give ... and she gives back to the community ... when there is a fundraiser ... she is always there to help ... there is not one person who can say bad about her ... she has employees who have been with her for years so it seems that she must be good to her employees ... so why would she not be deserving especially when she is going to improve the neighborhood ...
I for one am thrilled about the upcoming changes ... and hell maybe the skyline in North Scranton could use a little sprucing up ... again Thank you to Cathy Gavin!

Violent crime down 13%? What a bunch of bull... DO they read their own rag of a paper? Just read the Police Briefs that are in the daily rag. Violent crime DOwn?? I think not. Every day I read aboutstabbings, robberies, arson, carjackings, gun crimes, rapes, etc. I DOn't think condemning properties illegally will stop crime. The criminals will just move DOwn the street. Maybe when Poochie is finally vacant, they can move there!
Ok now I know from watching the news that there was a stabbing recently in Brick Avenue in North Scranton ... as it turns out it was a domestic thing ... for real a wife stabbed her husband ... and I do know that there have been robberies ... but car jackings, gun crimes and rape???? Have there been rapes and shootings that I did not hear about ... I must have missed the story on this happening in Scranton ... I know that there have been rapes ... but this does not mean that there is no crime in Scranton ... what it says is VIOLENT CRIME IS DOWN BY 13% .... where in that statement does it say that there is no crime in Scranton??????
From watching the news I know that these are everyday occurances in Luzerne County ... but was unaware that Scranton had this going on daily.
And I am wondering ... are you reading Police Briefs or Courthouse Notes ... because the Courthouse Notes would give a snippet of information that would be county wide and not just citywide ... just a question?
