I had the pleasure of seeing David Gates perform at the F.M. Kirby Center back in 2003, and it was a terrific show. One of the songs he performed was 'Everything I Own', which he told the audience was written for his father after he had passed away. So here are the lyrics and an audio clip, along with a wish that every dad out there has a great Father's Day.
Everything I Own (by David Gates)
You sheltered me from harm. You kept me warm. You kept me warm.
You gave my life to me. You set me free. You set me free.
The finest years I ever knew. Were all the ones I spent with you.
I would give anything I own. Give up my life and my heart, my home. I would give everything I own Just to have you back again.
You taught me how to love. And what its of, What its of.
You never said too much but still you showed the way. And so I knew From watching you.
Nobody else can ever know. The part of me that cant let go.
I would give anything I own. Give up my life and my heart, my home. I would give everything I own Just to have you back again.
Just to touch you once again.
Is there someone you know Youre loving them so But taking them all for granted?
You may lose them one day. Someone takes them away And theyll never hear the words you have to say.
I would give anything I own. Give up my life and my heart, my home. I would give everything I own just to have you back again.
Everything I own. My life, my heart, my home. Id give everything I own. My life, my heart, my home.
Every little thing. (repeat)
Just to have you back again. Just to hold you.

Before I was myself you made me, me With love and patience, discipline and tears, Then bit by bit stepped back to set me free,
Allowing me to sail upon my sea, Though well within the headlands of your fears. Before I was myself you made me, me
With dreams enough of what I was to be And hopes that would be sculpted by the years, Then bit by bit stepped back to set me free,
Relinquishing your powers gradually To let me shape myself among my peers. Before I was myself you made me, me,
And being good and wise, you gracefully As dancers when the last sweet cadence nears Bit by bit stepped back to set me free.
For love inspires learning naturally: The mind assents to what the heart reveres. And so it was through love you made me, me By slowly stepping back to set me free.

Thanks ag, i have not heard that song in a while, it was refreshing and made me take a look at the important people in my life and to never take them for granted, thanks again,
I'd also like to wish all the dad's out there a HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!
God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so,
He called it ... Dad

Art...that's far from being a grump...in fact, it's a great reminder that a good father really is a special thing.
My father wasn't there for any of his kids, as he was busy for all his life fighting numerous personal demons that always seemed to have the better hand of things. Even in that though, he helped me, all be it by showing me what not be to be as a father. So I do my best with my three daughters to do the right things and be there for them. No claims of success on my end, but hey, I give it a try.

I'm sure Ag that you are a great father ... I think that more than material objects children need to be nurtured and what does it take for that ... being there ... and you are there ... so I'm sure you are a wonderful father.
We had absolutely nothing growing up ... but what we did have were two loving and caring parents who sat and helped with homework and spent time playing ball with us in the yard ... and we went on countless family picnics ... but we had no money ... yet we were rich in what we did have ... My father (and mother) gave me my work ethic ... my respect of others ... they taught me to treat others as I would like to be treated ... yet they taught me to stand on my own two feet and not take any $hit ... and not to let others be stepped on if I could help I should ... and that means more to me than any material object ever could.
I'm sure your a great father ...

My fondest memories of my father are when I remember him dancing with my mother in his arms. They loved to dance to Al Martino's "Blue Spanish Eyes". He didn't have a voice like Al Martino, my mother told me, but he would either sing or hum into her ear as they danced cheek to cheek. The smile on her face as he did so, was priceless. I had a wonderful father.
My father was always singing with and to my mother ... we didn't have much ... but we had a lot of love and we had a lot of fun ...
When my father sang to my mother she would giggle like a school girl ... he used to chase her around the kitchen singing "Come On Baby light my fire" ... and Anti would have hated my father as he was very proud of his Irish heritage ... he was always singing one Irish tune or another ... I was very lucky growing up to have been blessed with such good parents.
And I still feel lucky to have known him ... I was truly blessed ... he was my world ... and I miss him every day ... there is no bond like the bond between a father and his daughter ... he is what I base all men on ... I expect that all men treat women with high regard ... as though they were a precious jewl ... what I wouldn't give for one more moment with him. One more hug ... one more roll of the eyes as only he could roll them ... one more laugh with him ... one more time in my life to know that no matter what I do ... or where I go ... that somebody in this world will love me unconditionally ... but I have the dream of him and seeing him again.
I am sorry that I got sosloppy sentimentalguys ... but that's how I am when I think of my father ... anyone canfather a child... but not everyone can be a Daddy ... there is a difference! And there is no magic other than being there ... it's not how much (material objects) you give ... but how much of yourself and your time you give ... that's what makes a Daddy!
And Ag ... I'm sure you are a Great one ... you are a caring person and I can't imagine that the passion you show on this board does not overflow into your home life ... you are someone (even though we have never really met) I am proud to call friend!
