Ok so this guy lists the Doherty team ... there is a problem though ... there are more than 5 names on this team ... Hey guys and gals ... only 5 seats are open ... you all knew that didn't you? You list 7 people ....
The "Leper's" School Board slate "Mayor Doherty says he doesn't have time to recruit and back a slate of candidates for the Scr. School Board." - Roderick Randon 4/21/07
Joe Gatelli, Dan Keeler, Kathleen McGuigan, Pat Mitchell, Carol Oleski, Joe Matyjevich and Paul McGloin are described as Doherty's team in the SSB race. McGloin and Matyjevich are low end contenders who are like flies around a rotting watermelon that voters will swat away. Gatelli is double-cursed, once with Doherty's name and once with his wife's name attachment to our tax bills present and future. Keeler will do just that, Keel, but thin the voting pool a little. McGuigan the incumbent is a lock, but Mitchell and Oleski are not as they struggle to get 40 people to attend a cheap rally.
It's not hard to understand why the mayor says he has no slate. Even he knows that his name curses any candidate's chances of winning. Alignment with the name Gatelli serves up the same political poison. The exposure of vast corruption on this site has made the names Doherty and Gatelli something to be dreadfully ashamed of, so none of the candidates are openly admitting alignment with him. But, it's there. It's all about jobs. The SSD hands out jobs like we hand out the simple courtesy of a "thank you" all day. The Doherty team should be defeated in the grandest of style. It's time for not only change, but for strong messages. The voters only have one way of sending a message, in the voting booth. Encourage your family to get out and vote and don't touch any of these names with a ten-foot pole. They are, after all, the Doherty team.

School daze as Doherty hovers around edges of race BY RODERICK RANDOM 04/28/2007 Email to a friendPrinter-friendly Mayor Chris Doherty insists he really is staying out of the Scranton School Board race, but he keeps doing things that make people doubt that.
The latest is speaking last week at a fundraiser for School Board candidates Carol Oleski and Joseph Matyjevich.
Several people who were there came back thinking the mayor endorsed Mrs. Oleski and Mr. Matyjevich.
It sounded like an endorsement to Joe Gatelli and School Director Kathleen McGuigan, two other board candidates who were there.
Mr. Doherty, Mrs. Oleski and Mr. Matyjevich insist it wasnt. The mayor never actually urged people to vote for Mr. Matyjevich and Mrs. Oleski, they said.
They all agree that Mr. Doherty did nothing more than introduce Mrs. Oleski and Mr. Matyjevich, tell the people in the room they should work for the candidates they support and that if they support Mr. Matyjevich and Mrs. Oleski, they should work on their behalf. He also noted the presence of several other candidates in the room.
By no means did he endorse Carol Oleski and Joe Matyjevich, Mr. Matyjevich said.
Mrs. Oleski said the mayor mentioned the names of Paul McGloin, Mrs. McGuigan, Mark Dougher, Daniel Keeler, Patrick Mitchell and Mr. Gatelli. Mrs. McGuigan said she didnt hear her name mentioned.
All have some connection to the mayor, which makes many Democrats who dont like him believe hes meddling in the School Board race the way he did four years ago. Mr. Doherty said theyre all friends of his, and hes already gone to rallies for Mr. Gatelli, Mr. McGloin and Mr. Mitchell.
If they invite me, I go, he said.
Hes not endorsing anyone, he said. Period.
********LIAR ALERT Now Joe Gatelli had one rally and I happened to be there the entire time, mayor dougherty was not invited and did not attend the rally.
Well here are my thoughts ... even if he chooses to endorse ... he has nothing to do with the daily operations of the SSD ... they are two entirely seperated governing bodies ... so why would he be so interested in the SSD ... It would be great if the two bodies could work together as far as purchasing would go ... but the purchasing policies of the district and the city are entirely different ... so that couldn't happen ... it is the School Directors who hand out the positions in the school district (teachers are hired from the eligibilty list) ... I guess the Mayor could ask for a favor ... but 5 directors are needed in order to be hired ... so the probability of that happening ... well I just don't think there is a chance ... it would require the Mayor to make sure there is a Majority of School Directors that are on his side ... what are the chances of that ... slim to none ... so I don't know why he would bother with the SSD when he has enough problems with City Council ...

RE: Can SSD employee run for Board? Short answer-No. A teacher is forbidden by the school code from being a director in his/her district where employed.A teacher may be on the board in the district where they live, thus an Old Forge resident employed by Scranton may be on the board in Old Forge since they are not employed by OF. Any non-professional employee would have a conflict in that they would be voting on their own pay via the school budget--which is the reason for the ban on teachers and principals. If a person runs for the office they must be retired before being sworn in. That may be what the school district employees who are running must do. Otherwise they will be bounced out. A good argument aginst their cnadiacy is that they are way too close to the action and could not be objective enough on budget issue because their freinds would benefit from their actions.
....... I have a feeling they were alluding to Joe Gatelli, well as of the end of school he will be retired..... On a side note, I bet they did not know that they should not vote for Chris Phillips or Paul O'malley, since they have family that work in the district and they would be voting on their pay also.....
I don't think that it's an issue myself as the SSD is the largest employer in the City of Scranton right now I think that we would be hard pressed to find a candidate that does not have a relative working in the district ... it's just an observation ... and my opinion but I don't think that is any reason to "not vote" for a candidate ... most sitting directors right now have family in the SSD ... some were there before the Directors and some came after their family became a director.
