Who saw her speech? Was it televised? Did she actually claim, among other things, that lawsuits are giving the city a black eye?
I see she called for a recall vote. A few thoughts on that...
Clearly, it's just throwing a bone to her people, since it'll never happen. First of all, by her own admission, it may not be legal to do so but that the Home Rule Charter should be amended to allow it. What she's basically doing here is calling on Council to pass a "popular" motion whichmay beillegal to begin with (a recall election or, oh, I don't know, a smoking ban lets say), and then going back and changing the rules to make it legal. Psst, Janet, isn't that one of the things that supposedly got us in this mess we're in inthe first place? Secondly, if you're going to have a recall election, I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is. Put everyone's money whereyour big suckingmouth is. Have a recall for every individual councilperson. Being that Scranton is a STRONG MAYOR, WEAK COUNCIL form of government (where each council personreally doesn't even have 1/5 the mayor's authority), the city will get by just fine temporarily if one or two or even all of you get voted out of office. Let's see if you can scrape together 17,000 yes votes, Blondie.
Channel 61 may not have given the city a black eye, but it sure let an awful lot of people take a look at the shiner.
If you don't like Evans, that's your business. Clearly, anyone who watches these meetings witnesses her struggle to get answers and documentation regarding the mayor's spending spree, among other things. I like what she is doing. I like her courage and dignity, and I like that she won't bend, buckle or break under the pressure the Times puts on her. We can only benefit from her efforts.

I didn't hear the Janet Evans campaign speech, but in the true spirit of both Bill Clinton and Karl Rove*, I think you can listen to just about ANYTHING she says and it will be a campaign speech.
(*) Both firm believers that you never stop campaigning; Rove must be a mentor of sorts to Janet, as she seems to have adopted his 'smashmouth' style of campaigning. The swiftboating of Gatelli/Fanucci/McGoff/Doherty has already begun.

I can't believe there are people out there that actually listen to that gasbag. The voice alone is enough to make me change the channel. I thank the Good Lord I don't have to be personally exposed to her on a regular basis. Channel changing I can do ... keep a civil tongue in my head around her, I don't think it's possible and I am a big enough person to admit that. I would have to rip her arm off just so I had something to hit her with.
