In today's paper in the Our Opinion section there is a piece on the Buona Pizza Saga that is unfolding in our town ... I don't know about the rest of you but I myslef would like to see Buona Pizza saved ... I am a great fan of this Pizza and we have it in our home regularly ...
I guess I would have to say that I agree with the neighbors across the hall on this issue ... why is it that Buona Pizza is being asked to vacate? The building is not in disrepair ... so how can we condem it? The product they put forward is a quality pizza .... taste is great and people do come from all over for this pizza ... now when you go inside this establishment you would think that they have no business ... it seems as though the bulk of their business is a take out business ... I know myself that I never stay in the building ... but from my visits to this establishment I can tell you this much ... it seems to be in good shape ... and it is always clean ... I think (and it is only my opinion) that they should be allowed to stay in the downtown ... I would hate to lose this business to the outlying area ... If they do not fit to what the neighborhood is going to be then make them fit ... give them a new facade ... or give them a spot in a new building ... what is the problem here ... we need to keep this business as they have been a taxpaying business for over 40 years.
Mayor Doherty please save Buona Pizza .... give them in writing an offer of relocation so that we may continue to enjoy this pizza ... that the citizens of Scranton have come to love ... hey where else do you get a pizza in 15 minutes ... that's right folks Buona Pizza is always ready in 15 minutes ... How do they do that!
Again ... I'm rambling ... but let's keep Buona Pizza in our Downtown!

I too enjoy eating pizza from Buona’s, and I actually eat there every once in a while (usually if I have the day off and I have errands to run).On one hand the building is, in my opinion, a dump. It’s out of character for the downtown and clearly was built more with utility than the aesthetic in mind. That’s not a crime, and the food is excellent, so up until now who cared? However that side of Lackawanna Avenue looks horrible and given the proximity to the Hilton, I can see the need for redevelopment. That said, this place is a Scranton institution (I am sooooo old that I remember as a kid going to Buona’s when they were in another building on Lackawanna Avenue), so I too strongly urge the Mayor to come up with some kind of agreement whereby the business can stay downtown AND the block can be redeveloped. Will this mean doing more for this business than what has traditionally been done for others facing condemnation via eminent domain?Probably yes, but then again difficult times often call for creative solutions.

Ag I agree it's not a pretty building ... but is it unsafe ... I'm not saying to keep it exactly as it is ... but I am saying that we owe this business something ... they have stayed ... and have as you stated been a staple in this city for many years ... so I do agree that if it takes doing more for them than traditionally done for others ... then so be it ... I would like to see Buona Pizza in the downtown of Scranton for another 40 years!

My sympathy for Buona ends at the end of the dilapidated block. I remember that dude paying off on the Joker Poker machines, letting all kinds of bad crowds hand out, doing whatever he could to make a buck. Fair enough.
Now someone else needs to do whatever they can to make a buck. No one is keeping out of the downtown, and he should be paid a fair price for his building, but gimme a break. If his pizza is so damn good he can sell it anywhere downtown where there's no parking and no foot traffic.
The needs of the many ourweight he needs of the few, or the one. He can and should stay downtown, but his building and it's little parking lot (which is what he really doesn't want to give up) can go elsewhere.
Sorry, kind of heartless, I know, but too bad. I make no apologies. I've had enough of the Dalkowitz's and Ufbergs of the world holding up progress.
I think the movie PCU coined the term for what DD.com has become. They're all "causeheads." They're not happy unless they're protesting something. Before Buona's, it was the smoking ban. Before that it was the McGoff appointment. Before that it was the Complex sale. There's a support group for people like Joe. On and On Anon.
The lot where Langan's Deli used to be can be bought by Piccolino and redeveloped. He'll have room for expansion, parking, and access to the car dealerships that his uncle(?) had when Americo's was on Wyoming Ave years ago. A nice place doing good business, IIRC. If Buona's clientel is as loyal as it's being portrayed, they will be found, having moved less than a mile up N Washington Ave. Would the banner have even have been picked up over there if the owner of the place had the last name of O'Shea, or Murphy, or McWhatever?
On a side note, the article posted by SickoftheBS is a blog on Eminent Domain written by a chiropracter. It may be interesting, but it's no more gospel or useful than a lawbook or legal dissertation prepared by, say, a carpenter.
This pizza is the best pizza I have ever eaten and if it ain't dripping orange grease down to your elbow, it ain't pizza. I would love to see them stay downtown (if they can't, they can move in next door to me!!!) I can see how they would feel singled out, but fellas, come on - you CAN sell pies anywhere downtown. Take the new location and run with it!
I, too, remember the old building and the two young Italian brothers flipping pies. You'd call in an order and they'd answer: "Bone-a Pete's" You'd place your order and they'd reply: "tenna min-oots"
If Buona is taken by eminent doman, it will be criminal in my opinion. Eminent domain is not to be used for private development, end of story. Nothing else needs to be said.
If this is allowed to happen, it will set a dangerous precedent. The fact that the government can just swoop in and take your property for whatever they feel like doing with it, is scary in my opinion.

Sam ... I just would like to state here that this already happened. So the precedent has already been set. When the Steamtown Mall was being constructed ... there were a few holdouts in the group and the city had to take the business by Eminent Domain. So it has been done for private development in our city in tthe past. I'm not saying that the right thing to do ... but I do believe that the city went to court over this in the past and has been successful.

I can't argue against your point Tripp Park/Sam. Yes, I think the Buona Pizza building looks horrible, but I'm also not comfortable with any government (at any level) exercising that amount of power. So let's all hope that calmer heads will prevail and that there will be some kind of reasonable settlement. Besides, how many actually want to hear Janet Evans continue to drone on about this, week after week? Another five minute Buona's tirade from her and blood will start to trickling out of my ears.

Yes guys janet does get a little long winded, the week she was not at the meeting(birth of her grandchild...congrats to that J.E ) the meeting was cut short by 90 min.
Isn't it funny how the DD gang were all about Geovani Piccolino and the plight of Buona Pizza in the beginning ... Don't give in until you get what you want ... that was their advice ... make sure you get it in writing!
Well now how they have turned on him ... the criticize him for being a council candidate who had a mission ... well how can Joe criticize that ... he proclaims himself to be a man who has a mission to bring down Chris Doherty ... over ... that's right ... a handicap ramp ... (ever here of the ADA Joe) ... Now we have Geovani Piccolino who way of life was about to be taken away ... his business ... that has been in his family for 40+ years ... and they criticize Piccilino because he accepted a great deal ... Come on get real over there. Scranton "Political" Times(RE: Eminent Domain and Buona Pizza, More DO BS)
And now we have our up to date "I hate Buona for accepting the deal" thread ... lets make up our minds ... you are all nothing but a bunch of hypocrites!Scranton "Political" Times(Hold the pepperoni on Piccolino) ... I can't even imagine what it must be like to live in the head of one of these nuts for even a moment. Can any of you?
